Duck Meal

Concentrated duck protein, with an allergy catch

Duck meal is rendered duck flesh and skin, sometimes with bone, dried after much of the water and fat are removed. It supplies concentrated animal protein, but the word duck alone cannot promise easy digestion or safety for a chicken-allergic dog.

What it is

How it is made

Duck processing leaves usable flesh and skin outside fresh retail cuts. Rendering cooks this material, removes much of its water and fat, then dries and grinds the solids. The result is a storable protein ingredient for kibble.7,9

  1. 01 // Source Duck parts Flesh and skin enter the rendering line, with or without attached bone.
  2. 02 // Process Cooked and separated Heat cooks the material while water leaves and fat separates from the protein solids.
  3. 03 // Process Dried and ground The cooked solids are dried and ground so they store and mix with other ingredients.
  4. 04 // Output Duck meal The kibble plant receives a dry rendered ingredient with far less water than fresh duck.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

60.8

% protein

Protein in 1 analyzed duck meal. It shows why meal supplies substantial protein, but cannot describe every supplier's product.

Crude protein 60.8%4
Ash 17.3%4
Gross energy 4,620 kcal/kg4

These figures describe 1 duck meal, not a supplier range. A later study tested 2 duck meals. Bone is permitted, but neither study tells you the bone share in the meal on your bag.3,4,7

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds protein without water

Meal enters the recipe after much of its water has been removed. Each pound weighed into a recipe therefore contributes more duck solids than a pound of fresh duck.4,7

  2. 02

    Simplifies dry food production

Rendered meal ships and stores as a dry ingredient. Kibble makers can weigh it into a recipe without handling the water that comes with fresh duck.7

  3. 03

    Uses processing leftovers

Rendering turns parts left after meat processing into saleable protein. The renderers' trade association says recovering this material also saves production costs.9

How much Published dog diets included 8% or 12% duck meal alongside other animal proteins; neither study isolated duck meal's effect.1,2

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Duck meal gives more protein per pound than fresh duck

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

One analyzed duck meal was 60.8% protein on a dry matter basis. Rendering removes much of fresh duck's water, so meal brings more duck solids per pound as listed. The label does not reveal its share of the finished food's protein.4,7,8

  2. Brands say

Duck meal supplies digestible animal protein

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a rooster assay, every essential amino acid in 1 tested duck meal exceeded 80% digestibility. That supports usable protein, but the published dog diets mixed duck meal with other proteins and did not measure its own digestibility.1,2,4

  3. Brands say

Duck is safe for every chicken-allergic dog

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a Royal Canin funded lab study, 29 of 30 chicken-reactive dog sera also bound duck extract. Antibody binding is not a feeding challenge, but it gives no basis to promise duck is safe for every affected dog.5

  4. Critics say

    Duck meal is low-grade filler

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A tested meal contained 60.8% protein on a dry matter basis, and its essential amino acids exceeded 80% digestibility in a rooster assay. It has a nutritional job. Those tests still cannot grade every supplier's meal.3,4

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Duck meal supplies protein and minerals. One analyzed sample was 60.8% protein on a dry matter basis. The ingredient list does not disclose how much was added, so judge it alongside the finished food's nutrient analysis.4,8

  2. Q02

    Is it duck by-product meal?

    No

US poultry meal describes rendered flesh and skin, with possible bone. Poultry by-product meal permits other parts, including feet and intestines. Duck meal's name still does not disclose its flesh-to-bone mix.7

  3. Q03

Will it suit a chicken allergy?

    No guarantee

Duck is a different ingredient, but a lab study found antibodies recognizing both chicken and duck. In a separate study, 10 of 12 selected limited-ingredient dry foods contained undeclared animal material. Choose an allergy trial diet carefully.5,6

  4. Q04

Does fresh duck first mean more protein?

    Not necessarily

Ingredients are ranked by weight, and fresh duck carries water that meal has already lost. A first-place fresh duck listing does not prove it contributes more protein than duck meal farther down the list.7,8

Our read // On the bag

Read duck meal with the whole recipe

Duck meal high on the list is a meaningful protein source because it is weighed after drying. Read the ingredients around it and the finished food's analysis before judging how much duck protein you are buying. If allergy drives the choice, check every animal ingredient and select a diet suited to a proper trial.
