Bell Pepper

A small vegetable addition, not an immune boost

Bell pepper is the sweet, nonspicy pepper fruit, added to food as pieces or powder. It brings color, flavor and some fiber. Its place on a label does not show that the finished food improves a dog's health.

What it is

How it is made

Growers sell bell peppers fresh or for processing. Fruit that misses fresh-market specifications may find a secondary market. Some peppers are cut into pieces while others are dried and ground, though the label does not identify the supplier's route.3,4,8

  1. 01 // Source Sweet peppers Green and red fruit is harvested at different stages of ripeness for fresh sale or processing.
  2. 02 // Process Cleaned and cut The fruit is washed and cut; food processors may use it in pieces, puree or sauces.
  3. 03 // Process Dried if needed Shredded pepper is sometimes dried and ground into a colored powder instead of remaining moist.
  4. 04 // Output Pieces or powder Prepared pepper reaches a food plant as moist pieces or as powder with much of its water removed.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

9-12

% crude fiber

Measured in dried green and red peppers from one study. Pepper supplies fiber, but the amount reaching a dog depends on the recipe.

Crude fiber 9.2-11.6%2
Crude protein 9.2-11.9%2
Ash 5-6.4%2
Potassium 3.3-4%2

For fiber, protein and ash, the paper says the peppers were cleaned but does not specify seed removal. Potassium came from separate samples with seeds removed. Ripeness and growing method also varied.2

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds color and flavor

Bell peppers bring their own taste and pigment. Red pepper powder retains visible color after drying, which gives a manufacturer another way to add the ingredient.3,4

  2. 02

    Supplies some fiber

Dried pepper contains crude fiber. Its contribution to a finished food depends on how much pepper the manufacturer uses; the ingredient name alone cannot tell you that.2,5

  3. 03

    Offers another produce market

Secondary markets can take crops that miss fresh-market specifications, giving growers another outlet. The bag does not reveal whether its pepper came from that supply.8

How much For fresh snacks, a veterinarian recommends less than one-quarter pepper for small dogs and less than one-half for large dogs at a time.6

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Bell pepper boosts a dog's immune system

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A review compared 4 pepper colors and found carotenoid pigments, but says most related tests were done in vitro. It did not report a dog trial feeding bell pepper or measuring illness. Nutrient content is not proof of an immune benefit.4,6

  2. Owners say

Red bell pepper is healthier for dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A review tabulated carotenoids across 4 pepper colors, with red highest. It did not feed peppers to dogs or test health outcomes. Calling red the healthiest color for dogs goes beyond that comparison.4,6

  3. Brands say

Pepper vitamin C protects dogs from oxidative damage

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 15-dog crossover trial, purified vitamin C did not improve measured antioxidant status in dogs already getting ample vitamin E. Pepper itself was not tested, and dogs make their own vitamin C.1,4,7

  4. Owners say

Bell peppers are toxic because they are nightshades

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A veterinarian quoted by AKC says the edible fruit is not toxic and recommends less than one-quarter pepper at a time for small dogs. Membership in the nightshade family does not make plain bell pepper poisonous.6

  5. Critics say

    Bell pepper is just filler

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A study of green and red peppers measured 9.23 to 11.6% crude fiber on a dry basis. A small recipe addition has a small effect, but calling the ingredient nutritionally empty ignores what is present.2

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Pepper contains fiber and potassium, and it adds color and flavor. A small amount makes a small contribution. Judge the complete food rather than treating this vegetable as proof of quality.2,4

  2. Q02

    Are bell peppers safe?

    Yes

Plain bell pepper is safe for most dogs. Large fresh portions can upset the stomach. Pepper dishes containing onion or garlic are a separate hazard, so keep seasoned leftovers away.6

  3. Q03

    Does red pepper matter more?

    For color

Red fruit generally has more carotenoid pigment than green fruit. That does not show it improves a dog's eyes or immunity. Pepper color on a bag is a poor shortcut for the food's nutritional value.4

  4. Q04

Why is it low on the list?

    By weight

Ingredients are listed by weight as they enter the recipe. Fresh bell pepper carries substantial water, so its position says little about the nutrients left in a finished dry food.4,5

Our read // On the bag

Read the recipe, not the pepper story

Bell pepper low on the list is a small vegetable addition. In dry food, fresh pepper also brings substantial water to its listed weight, so a higher position proves little about finished nutrients. Check the main protein sources and the food's nutritional adequacy statement.
