Pumpkin Meal

Useful dry fiber with oversold gut claims

Pumpkin meal is dried, ground pumpkin, made from flesh and sometimes peel. It adds fiber and carbohydrate to kibble. A food containing dried pumpkin improved dogs' stools, but the study cannot tell us what pumpkin alone did.

What it is

How it is made

Fresh pumpkin spoils quickly, and processors often discard its peel. Drying the flesh, sometimes with peel, extends the crop's usable life and gives food makers a ground ingredient they can store.3,8

  1. 01 // Source Ripe pumpkins The flesh supplies the meal; some preparations also use the edible peel.
  2. 02 // Process Cut and deseeded In one flour study, processors washed and cut the fruit, then removed the seeds.
  3. 03 // Process Air dried Heated air removed water from the pumpkin pieces before they were milled.
  4. 04 // Output Ground pumpkin meal The dried pieces were ground into flour; pet food suppliers also sell whole pumpkin powder.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

35

% fiber

Total dietary fiber in one tested flesh and peel flour. Pumpkin meal contributes fiber, but this figure is not a specification for every supplier.

Total dietary fiber 35.3%3
Insoluble fiber 27%3
Soluble fiber 8.4%3
Digestible carbohydrate 42.8%3
Protein 12.1%3
Fat 3.7%3
Ash 6.1%3

These figures come from flesh and peel flour. A supplier's whole pumpkin powder has a different analysis and reports crude fiber, a measure that cannot be compared directly with total dietary fiber.3,8

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds mixed fiber

The tested flour contained both insoluble and soluble fiber. Formulators can use it to adjust a recipe's fiber content, though its presence does not predict a stool result.1,3

  2. 02

    Adds orange color

Carotenoid pigments give pumpkin flour its orange color. That changes how an ingredient looks; it does not show that the finished food protects a dog's health.3,4

  3. 03

    Extends the selling season

Fresh pumpkin is perishable, and peels are often discarded. Drying makes the crop usable for longer and gives processors another use for edible peel.3

How much A 56-day dog study included dried pumpkin among several fibers but did not publish its amount, so a usual recipe percentage is unavailable.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Pumpkin meal adds fiber to kibble

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A tested flesh and peel flour contained 35.33% total dietary fiber on a dry matter basis. Adding that flour adds fiber; the measurement does not tell us how much pumpkin any particular kibble contains.3

  2. Brands say

    Pumpkin meal firms loose stools

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Stools improved in a 31-dog study of a therapeutic food containing dried pumpkin and several other fibers. There was no comparison food or published pumpkin dose, so the study cannot assign the improvement to pumpkin.1

  3. Brands say

Pumpkin meal feeds a healthier gut microbiome

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A microbiome analysis of the same 31 dogs found changes in fermentation after they ate the mixed-fiber food. It was not an independent trial, and it did not isolate pumpkin's effect on gut bacteria or health.1,2

  4. Brands say

Beta carotene gives dogs antioxidant protection

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A puree drying study reported 855 micrograms of total carotenoids per gram of dry flour, expressed in beta carotene units. It did not measure beta carotene alone or test antioxidant effects in dogs.3,4

  5. Critics say

    Pumpkin meal is just filler

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

One flour measured 35.33% dietary fiber and 42.76% calculated digestible carbohydrate on a dry matter basis. Those contribute to a recipe. The fair limitation is that pumpkin-specific health benefits remain unproved.3

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Pumpkin meal supplies fiber and carbohydrate. Whether a food needs that fiber depends on the whole recipe. The ingredient's presence does not prove a digestive claim on the bag.3

  2. Q02

    Will it stop diarrhea?

    No proof

A therapeutic food with dried pumpkin and several other fibers improved stools in dogs with chronic diarrhea. The study did not isolate pumpkin. Recurring diarrhea needs an assessment rather than more of one ingredient.1,7

  3. Q03

    Is it pumpkin seed meal?

    No

The tested pumpkin flour was made after removing the seeds. Pumpkin seed oil meal comes from processed seeds and is much richer in protein, so its analysis does not describe pumpkin flesh meal.3,5

  4. Q04

Why is it low on the list?

    Small addition

Ingredients appear from most to least by weight. A low placement means less pumpkin than the ingredients above it, but gives no exact amount. Check the food's fiber analysis to judge the complete recipe.6

Our read // On the bag

Read it as fiber, then judge the food

Pumpkin meal low on the ingredient list is a small addition by weight, though the label gives no percentage. Check the food's fiber analysis and the ingredients above it. Treat promises that pumpkin alone will fix stools or provide antioxidant protection as unproved.
