Dried Sweet Potatoes

Printed as “Dehydrated Sweet Potatoes” on some labels. Same ingredient.

Useful starch, with health claims to skip

Dried sweet potatoes are sweet potato roots with most of their water removed, often ground into flour. In kibble they supply starch for energy and some fiber. The claims about steadier blood sugar and better eyesight outrun the evidence in dogs.

What it is

How it is made

Sweet potatoes are grown mainly for food, but roots also enter animal feed. Processors dry the starchy roots to make a material that stores and ships with much less water.3,4

  1. 01 // Source Sweet potato roots Harvested storage roots supply the starchy material; roots directed away from food sales also enter feed.
  2. 02 // Process Cleaned and cut Processors clean the roots, then shred or slice them into smaller pieces for drying.
  3. 03 // Process Dried Sun or hot air removes water from the cut roots before storage or grinding.
  4. 04 // Output Pieces or flour The dried roots arrive as pieces or ground flour that manufacturers mix into kibble.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

73.5

% starch

The average for dehydrated sweet potato tubers. Starch is the ingredient's main contribution to a dog's food.

Starch 68.2-77.7%3
Crude protein 3-6%3
NDF 5.2-15.7%3
Total sugars 4-9.9%3
Crude fiber 2-3.7%3
Crude fat 0.5-2.1%3

Variety changes the root's sugar content and flesh color. Drying method changes how much beta carotene remains. Crude fiber measures less of the plant material than the broader NDF measure.2,3,4

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Supplies starch energy

Dehydrated sweet potato is mostly starch. Cooking makes more of that starch accessible to digestion, so the root chiefly adds energy to the finished food.3,4

  2. 02

    Replaces cereal starch

Manufacturers use sweet potato in recipes built without grain. The substitution changes the starch source and the label, but the tested diets do not show a health advantage.1,3

  3. 03

    Stores as dry flour

Drying removes water before storage and shipping. Feedipedia reports that fresh sweet potato historically struggled to compete with imported grain on cost once its water was counted.3,4

How much A commercial dog diet trial listed sweet potato but did not publish its percentage, so a usual recipe amount is unknown.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

    Sweet potato supplies useful energy

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Feedipedia's dehydrated tuber samples averaged 73.5% starch on a dry matter basis. Starch supplies calories, while crude protein averaged only 4.6%. Energy is this ingredient's main nutritional job.3

  2. Brands say

Sweet potato keeps blood sugar steady

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 15-dog crossover, the sweet potato diet produced the smallest glucose response. It also contained 25% starch against about 28% in the other diets. The trial cannot credit sweet potato alone and included no diabetic dogs.1

  3. Brands say

    Its fiber improves gut health

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Dehydrated tubers contain fiber, with NDF ranging from 5.2 to 15.7% across Feedipedia samples. That composition does not show a gut health benefit in dogs eating a finished food.3

  4. Brands say

Beta carotene protects eyesight and immunity

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A study of 10 orange sweet potato clones found that drying method changed beta carotene retention. It measured roots, not eye or immune outcomes in dogs. The ingredient name does not reveal the root's flesh color.2,4

  5. Owners say

Dried sweet potatoes cause heart disease

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

FDA reviewed food labels named in canine DCM reports. Peas or lentils appeared in 93% of reported products; a far smaller share contained potatoes, including sweet potatoes. Those reports cannot show that this ingredient causes DCM.5

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Its starch supplies energy, so it has a clear job. It contributes some fiber but little protein. When it appears high on a bag, read it as a substantial starch ingredient.3,6

  2. Q02

    Does drying add nutrition?

    No

Drying removes water and concentrates what remains per ounce. It does not turn sweet potato into a protein source, and the amount of beta carotene retained depends on how the roots were dried.2,3

  3. Q03

Is it good for diabetic dogs?

    Not proven

The blood sugar trial studied healthy dogs eating complete diets, not dogs with diabetes eating this ingredient alone. Judge a diabetes diet by the whole recipe and the dog's glucose response.1,3

  4. Q04

    Does it cause heart disease?

    No proof

FDA included sweet potatoes when it reviewed potato ingredients in DCM reports. A report names a food eaten by an affected dog; it does not show that dried sweet potatoes caused the disease.5

Our read // On the bag

Read it as starch in the recipe

High on the ingredient list, dried sweet potatoes contribute a meaningful share of the food's starch. Lower down, their role is smaller. Check the finished food's calories, protein and fiber, then read what surrounds this ingredient. Skip promises about blood sugar, eyesight or the benefits of a grain free label.
