Bison

Real meat, but the label needs context

Bison is fresh muscle meat with most of its water still present when weighed for kibble. It supplies animal protein and flavor. Its name alone cannot tell you how much bison protein is in the finished food.

What it is

How it is made

Bison are raised and slaughtered for meat. Muscle used in pet food is separated from bone and prepared for mixing. Unlike bison meal, meat listed simply as bison arrives without first being rendered.2,7,9

  1. 01 // Source Slaughtered bison The meat comes from bison raised for food, whether finished on pasture or with grain.
  2. 02 // Process Meat separated Muscle is cut or mechanically separated from bone; meat listed as bison excludes bone.
  3. 03 // Process Prepared for mixing The raw meat is sized for mixing with other ingredients before the kibble is cooked.
  4. 04 // Output Fresh bison meat Raw muscle reaches the kibble plant with most of its original water still present.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

82-87

% protein

Protein in tested, trimmed bison striploins after water is excluded. Pet food trimmings may contain a different balance of meat and fat.

Crude protein 82.4-87.3%2
Crude fat 8.1-12.4%2
Ash 4.2-4.5%2

These figures come from trimmed striploins, not a pet food supplier's trimmings. A separate study sampled several cuts. Cut, trimming and finishing feed all affect the fat share.2,4

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds animal protein

Bison muscle contributes protein. Because fresh meat carries substantial water, its weight before cooking overstates its share of the finished kibble.2,8,9

  2. 02

    Names a distinct meat

A named bison ingredient gives a recipe a distinct meat identity and flavor claim. That says nothing about how much bison the dog eats.8,10

  3. 03

    Uses a smaller supply

US bison slaughter is small beside cattle slaughter. Manufacturers can offer bison as a named ingredient without making it the recipe's only protein.6,10

How much Recipes rarely disclose the bison share; under AAFCO's naming rule, a food labeled “with bison” must contain at least 3% bison.8

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

    Bison contributes real animal protein

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A study of raw bison striploin measured about 21% protein by fresh weight. Bison is a protein source, but its contribution to a dog's diet depends on the amount in the recipe.2,8

  2. Brands say

    Bison is leaner than beef

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A meat study measured 1.94% fat in pasture-finished bison striploin and 3.21% in grain-finished striploin. Its review found overlapping fat ranges for bison and beef. Neither result guarantees a lean finished kibble.2

  3. Brands say

    Grass-fed bison protects a dog's health

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Researchers compared meat from 20 pasture-finished and 20 pen-finished bison and found differences in its compounds. They did not feed either meat to dogs or measure a canine health outcome.3

  4. Brands say

Bison is especially easy for dogs to digest

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A brand calls bison highly digestible. The cited bison studies measured meat composition, not digestion in dogs. They provide no comparison showing that dogs digest bison better than another cooked meat.2,3,10

  5. Owners say

Bison is safe for every beef-allergic dog

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A veterinary dermatologist warns of possible reactions across beef and other ruminant meats, including bison. Separately, undeclared animal DNA appeared in 9 of 10 retail elimination diets tested. Neither finding makes a retail bison food a dependable allergy trial.1,5

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Bison is meat that contributes animal protein and flavor. The practical question is quantity: fresh meat carries substantial water, and the ingredient list does not disclose how much bison remains after cooking.2,7,8,9

  2. Q02

Does bison first mean mostly bison?

    No

Ingredients are ranked by weight before cooking. The tested raw bison striploin was about three quarters water, much of which leaves during kibble making. Read the other protein ingredients and the finished food's analysis.2,8,9

  3. Q03

Can a beef-allergic dog eat it?

    Not automatically

Bison is a different species, but related ruminant proteins can cross-react. Other listed meats and undeclared animal material also matter. A carefully selected, controlled diet trial is the reliable way to investigate food allergy.1,5

Read the other proteins beside the bison

Bison high on the list tells you fresh meat went in, not how much bison protein remains after cooking. Check the other meats and concentrated proteins, then the guaranteed analysis and nutritional adequacy statement. For a dog with a food allergy, choose the diet through a controlled trial.
