Catfish

Useful fish protein, with water in its weight

Catfish in dog food may come from whole fish or fish muscle, including usable trim. It supplies animal protein and some fat. Fresh catfish also carries substantial water, so its place on the ingredient list does not tell you how much protein it contributes.

What it is
Whole catfish or catfish skeletal muscle, with possible attached bone, used as a moist animal protein ingredient.
Made from
Whole catfish or catfish muscle
Main job
Animal protein
Typical amount

What it is

How it is made

Catfish may reach pet food production whole or as usable muscle from fish processing. Filleting also leaves muscle trim that processors can sell. Catfish meal takes a different route: it is cooked and dried before delivery.4,7,9

  1. 01 // Source Catfish The raw material is catfish, whether supplied whole or as muscle separated during processing.
  2. 02 // Process Fish selected Whole fish or skeletal muscle may be used; the ingredient name does not identify which form was chosen.
  3. 03 // Output Moist catfish Catfish reaches pet food production with its natural water and is cooked as the recipe is made.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

63

% protein

Protein in tested African catfish fillets after water is excluded. Whole fish and other catfish species need not match this sample.

Crude protein 63.2%3
Crude fat 22.8%3
Ash 4%3

These figures describe frozen African catfish fillets, not every catfish ingredient. Channel catfish muscle averaged 77.3% water in another study, and its fat varied between fish. Species and fish parts change the mix.3,5

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Supplies animal protein

Catfish contributes fish protein to the recipe. A controlled dog trial found that diets using other fish proteins maintained measured digestibility when they replaced poultry by-product meal.1,3

  2. 02

    Offers another protein

A different fish species gives formulators another protein option. For an allergic dog, whether it is useful depends on that dog's food history and the rest of the recipe.4,8

  3. 03

    Uses available muscle trim

Filleting leaves muscle alongside other processing residues. Virginia Tech reports that Chesapeake blue catfish processors sell low-value residues to pet food processors, giving usable fish material another outlet.4,7

  4. 04

    Contributes fish fat

Catfish brings fat as well as protein, but the fatty acid mix changes with the fish's diet. Its name alone cannot promise a useful omega-3 dose.3,5

How much No opened source gives a typical catfish amount in dog food; a controlled trial tested other fish proteins at 20% of the diet.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Catfish gives dogs useful animal protein

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

An African catfish fillet sample measured 63.23% protein on a dry matter basis. A controlled senior-dog trial fed other fish proteins at 20% without changing measured digestibility. That trial did not test catfish.1,3

  2. Brands say

    Catfish omega-3s improve a dog's coat

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Virginia Tech measured 598.5 mg of EPA and DHA per 100 g of blue catfish fillet, and channel catfish fat shifts with feed. No study has tested catfish or its fat on a dog's coat, and the kibble dose is unknown.5,6

  3. Brands say

Catfish is safe for every allergic dog

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Fish triggered reactions in 5 of 297 dogs with identified food reactions in a review. A protein is novel only for a dog that has not eaten it before. The catfish name cannot guarantee tolerance.2,8

  4. Owners say

Catfish listed first supplies the most protein

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Ingredients are listed by weight, and channel catfish muscle averaged 77.3% water in one analysis. Much of fresh catfish's listed weight leaves during cooking, so first place does not prove it supplies the most protein.5,9

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Catfish supplies protein and fat. The useful question is how much fish protein the finished food contains after cooking removes water. The ingredient list does not answer that on its own.3,5,9

  2. Q02

    Could it contain whole fish?

    Yes

AAFCO's committee description of fish allows whole fish or skeletal muscle with possible attached bone. A bag listing catfish does not tell you which form the maker used, and fillet trim is only one possibility.4

  3. Q03

Is catfish meal the same thing?

    No

Catfish is weighed with its natural water. Meal has already been cooked, dried and ground, so the same weight of meal starts with far less water. Compare the whole recipe rather than treating the names as equal amounts.5,9

  4. Q04

Will it suit my allergic dog?

    Maybe

It depends on what your dog has eaten and what else is in the food. For a diagnostic diet trial, use a controlled novel-protein or hydrolyzed diet; an ordinary catfish kibble can contain other proteins.2,8

Our read // On the bag

Read the recipe beyond the catfish name

Catfish near the top means the recipe contains a substantial wet weight of fish. Check the protein analysis and the other major ingredients before judging how much it contributes after cooking. If you need an allergy diet, choose a controlled diet trial rather than trusting the catfish name.

An ingredient on its own tells you very little. What matters is how much of it there is and where it sits in the list. That is why we weigh the top five rather than reacting to any single name further down. Back to the wiki
