Freeze-Dried Beef Heart

Real muscle meat, sold on heart claims it cannot keep

Freeze-dried beef heart is raw heart muscle dried under vacuum, never cooked. In kibble it adds lean protein as a raw coating or mixed-in pieces. The taurine and CoQ10 story does not reach your dog's heart in any proven way.

What it is
Raw beef heart muscle, frozen and then dried under vacuum so it keeps on a shelf without cooking.
Made from
Hearts from beef cattle at slaughter
Main job
Raw meat coating or pieces
Typical amount
Not published
Watch for
It is raw, so Salmonella and Listeria can survive
Not the same as
Beef liver or meat by-products

What it is

How it is made

Every beef carcass yields a heart, a working muscle that sells poorly at the meat counter. Freeze-drying makes it shelf-stable without cooking, which lets brands add a raw meat element to cooked kibble.1,6,7,13

  1. 01 // Source Beef hearts Heart muscle from cattle at slaughter. AAFCO counts heart as meat, alongside tongue and diaphragm, not as a by-product.
  2. 02 // Process Frozen solid Raw heart goes into the freezer at about 77% water, the water the next step has to remove.
  3. 03 // Process Vacuum dried Under vacuum, ice turns straight to vapor without melting, with the product held near minus 5°C. Nothing is cooked.
  4. 04 // Output Porous dried heart Light, sponge-like raw pieces or powder that must be sealed from moisture and air, then coated on or mixed into kibble.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

77

% protein

Protein in beef heart once the water is gone. Fresh heart is 77% water, so drying turns lean muscle into nearly pure protein.

Crude protein 77.4%1
Crude fat 17.2%1
Ash 4.8%1
Carbohydrate 0.6%1
Energy 4,893 kcal/kg1
Iron 188 mg/kg1

These are USDA figures for raw beef heart, converted to dry matter. Freeze-dried pieces keep a little water, so as-sold numbers run slightly lower, and fat shifts with how much outer fat stays on.1

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    A raw selling point

Brands bake or extrude the kibble first, then coat it or mix in freeze-dried raw pieces. The raw layer sells the bag as less processed to owners who want raw feeding.13

  2. 02

    Lean protein without water

Fresh heart is 77% water. Freeze-dried, it is about 77% protein and 17% fat on a dry basis, so each gram adds real muscle protein.1

  3. 03

    Meat flavor on the outside

A coating puts meat where the dog's nose meets the kibble. One raw-coated brand sells its line on taste; no published trial has measured heart coatings for palatability.13

How much No source publishes how much heart a recipe holds. Labels list by weight, so heart sitting below the main meals is a small share.6

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

    Freeze-dried heart is concentrated protein

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Plain arithmetic. Raw heart is 77% water and 17.7 g protein per 100 g, so dried it is about 77% protein. As a coating low in a list, though, it barely moves the bag's protein figure.1

  2. Brands say

Beef heart is a natural CoQ10 source for heart health

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Heart is the richest beef tissue tested, 110 µg per g against 23 for muscle. Yet a 43-dog trial of 200 mg CoQ10 daily found no echocardiographic benefit, and matching that dose takes about 1.8 kg of fresh heart.2,5

  3. Brands say

Heart supplies taurine that protects against DCM

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A feed survey found animal muscle high in taurine and plants low or empty. But dogs make their own from methionine and cysteine, FDA has not pinned down the cause of diet-linked DCM, and no study tests heart in kibble.3,4

  4. Owners say

    Freeze-drying makes raw meat safe

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Freeze-drying removes water below freezing and cooks nothing. A University of Guelph researcher calls it food preservation, not bacterial control, and a 112-product study flagged raw foods sold at room temperature as a considerable health risk.8,9

  5. Critics say

    Heart is a low-grade organ by-product

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

AAFCO files heart muscle under meat, with skeletal muscle, tongue and diaphragm, not under by-products. At about 77% protein and 17% fat on a dry basis, its makeup is lean muscle.1,6

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

Is beef heart an organ meat?

    It's muscle

Anatomically it is an organ, but labels and nutrition treat it as muscle. AAFCO files heart under meat, not by-products, and its dry matter is about 77% protein, like lean meat.1,6

  2. Q02

Does a raw coating make kibble raw?

    No

The kibble is cooked first and the freeze-dried coating or pieces go on afterward. You are feeding mostly cooked food with a raw layer, and that layer still carries raw meat's bacteria risk.8,13

  3. Q03

Will it help my dog's heart?

    No proof

No study has fed heart in kibble and measured heart health. Even purified CoQ10 at 200 mg a day for 3 months did not improve heart scans in dogs with valve disease.5

Our read // On the bag

Read it as a raw coating, not medicine

Freeze-dried beef heart below the main meals is a raw coating or a scatter of pieces, not the protein base. Judge the food by the meals above it and its dry matter protein. Ignore the taurine and CoQ10 talk, and handle the kibble like raw meat: wash hands and bowls.
