Salmon Oil
Useful fish fat, with benefits tied to dose
Salmon oil is fat separated from salmon, often from parts left after filleting. It supplies EPA and DHA, omega-3 fats tested for skin and joint conditions in dogs. The ingredient name alone does not tell you how much reaches your dog.
- What it is
- Oil separated from salmon tissue and used as a source of fat and marine omega-3s.
- Made from
- Salmon tissue, often processing leftovers
- Main job
- Fat and EPA plus DHA
- Typical amount

What it is
How it is made
Filleting leaves heads, skins and frames that still hold oil. Processors recover it as another product from the same fish. The oil may then be refined before it goes into food or supplements.6,7,8
- 01 // Source Salmon tissue Heads, skins and frames left after filleting still contain fat that processors can recover.
- 02 // Process Oil separated Processing separates oil from the tissue; methods include heating and enzyme treatment.
- 03 // Process Oil refined Crude fish oil may undergo refining and purification before it is sold for food use.
- 04 // Output Salmon oil The separated liquid fat reaches the pet food maker as an oil ingredient.

Why it is in the bag
What the manufacturer gets
-
01
Supplies EPA and DHA
Salmon oil adds these marine omega-3 fats directly. A maker can raise their levels without relying on a dog's conversion of the omega-3 fat in flaxseed oil.4,5
-
02
Adds fat and flavor
Like other animal oils, it adds calories and flavor. The fat contribution is certain; any skin or joint effect depends on the amount of EPA and DHA in the finished diet.5,9
-
03
Uses salmon leftovers
Recovering oil from heads, skins and frames gives processors another saleable product from the fish. The source material and extraction method affect the oil they get.7
How much A dog arthritis trial tested diets containing 0.8%, 2.0% and 2.9% EPA plus DHA on a dry matter basis.1
Our read // The claims
What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.
-
Brands say
Salmon oil supplies EPA and DHA
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
The USDA salmon oil entry lists both fats, and a separate analysis measured them in refined salmon oil. This is a sound description of the ingredient, but neither source gives the dose in a finished dog food.5,8
-
Brands say
Fish oil eases dogs' arthritis pain
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a blinded trial completed by 177 dogs, the highest EPA and DHA diet gave modest improvements in some clinical signs. A separate 77-dog placebo-controlled trial found no difference in its main pain outcomes. Neither tested salmon oil alone.1,2
-
Brands say
Salmon oil stops allergic itching
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a 22-dog trial, fish oil added to oclacitinib treatment reduced owner-rated itching compared with placebo, but skin lesion scores did not differ. Fish oil was an addition to medication, not a cure, and salmon oil was not tested separately.3
-
Owners say
Flaxseed oil gives the same omega-3 benefit
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a 6-week study, krill oil raised dogs' blood EPA and DHA while flaxseed oil did not. That is a fatty acid result, not a clinical health outcome; the krill supplier funded and authored the study.4
-
Critics say
Salmon oil is just filler
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
The USDA entry identifies salmon oil as fat with EPA and DHA, and AAFCO describes oils as sources of nutrients and flavor. The fair question is how much the finished food supplies, which its ingredient list does not quantify.5,9
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt supplies fat, calories, EPA and DHA. Those are real contributions. Its place on the ingredient list cannot tell you whether the finished food contains enough EPA and DHA to match amounts tested in dogs.5,9
-
Q02
Is salmon oil fish oil?
YesSalmon oil is a named fish oil from salmon-family fish. An unnamed fish oil could come from other fish. Either name identifies the source, but neither gives you the finished food's EPA and DHA amounts.6
-
Q03
Should I add more?
Not automaticallyA complete food may already provide the intended fat and omega-3s. Extra oil adds calories, and too much fat supplement can cause weight gain. Ask the maker for the food's EPA and DHA amounts before adding a topper.10

Look for the dose behind the name
Salmon oil low on a bag's ingredient list is a way to add marine fat, but list position gives no EPA or DHA amount. Read the finished food's nutrient information or ask its maker for those figures. If you use a separate oil, count its calories too.
