Squash

A real vegetable with modest benefits

Squash is edible fruit flesh added moist or dried to dog food. It contributes carbohydrate and some fiber. Its variety and amount are usually undisclosed, and studies have not shown that squash alone fixes loose stools or improves a dog's health.

What it is

How it is made

Squash comes from the produce trade, which also supplies fruit for processing. A published powder method washes, peels and grinds the flesh before drying it. Dog food makers also use squash in moist recipes.3,5,6,8

  1. 01 // Source Squash fruit Growers supply edible fruit, though an ingredient listed simply as squash does not identify its variety.
  2. 02 // Process Flesh prepared In a published powder method, processors washed, peeled and cut the fruit before grinding its flesh.
  3. 03 // Process Moist or dried The ground flesh can stay moist for food preparation or be dried and sifted into powder.
  4. 04 // Output Prepared squash The food maker uses prepared squash flesh, distinct from the separately traded seeds.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

14-53

% starch

Starch in buttercup and butternut squash at harvest and after storage. The range shows why the word squash alone tells you little about its composition.

Starch 14-53%4
Sugars 10-43%4
Cell wall 9-17%4
Protein 5-8%4
Ash 5-6%4

These figures describe buttercup and butternut squash, not every variety used in pet food. During storage, some starch becomes sugar; variety, harvest timing and processing add further differences.4,5

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds carbohydrate

Winter squash flesh contains starch and sugars. Their contribution to a finished food depends on how much squash the maker adds, which an ordinary ingredient list does not disclose.4,7

  2. 02

    Adjusts wet texture

Dried squash powder held water in a laboratory test, giving food makers a way to alter texture. That measurement did not test digestion or stool quality in dogs.5

  3. 03

    Uses an existing crop

USDA counted 65,176 tons of squash for processing in 2025. That produce stream gives manufacturers a named vegetable for recipes, though the report says nothing about pet food ingredient prices.6,8

How much One named wet recipe lists 4% butternut squash; that example does not define the amount used across dog foods.8

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Squash adds carbohydrate and some fiber

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A dry matter table for buttercup and butternut squash reports 14 to 53% starch and 9 to 17% cell wall material. Those are properties of the fruit, not a measured contribution to any particular dog food.4

  2. Brands say

    Squash firms loose stools

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 31-dog study found better stools after a switch to a fiber-rich food containing dried pumpkin among several fibers. It did not isolate pumpkin or test squash. Water binding measured in squash powder remains a laboratory finding.1,5

  3. Brands say

    Squash strengthens dogs' immune defenses

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A brand-authored trial measured immune-marker changes in 36 dogs given supplemental beta carotene. It tested neither squash nor fewer infections. A wet-food brand promotes squash for immunity, but its recipe does not supply that evidence.2,4,8

  4. Critics say

    Squash is just filler

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Winter squash contains starch and cell wall material, while dried squash powder binds water in laboratory tests. Those give it nutritional and recipe uses. The ingredient list does not reveal how much it contributes to a particular food.4,5,7

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Squash supplies carbohydrate and some fiber, and dried powder changes how a mixture holds water. Those are real jobs. Its name on a bag does not tell you how much of either reaches your dog.4,5,7

  2. Q02

    Will it firm loose stool?

    Unproven alone

Squash powder holds water in a lab test, but that is not a feeding result. A dog study used dried pumpkin within a larger fiber blend, so its improved stools cannot be credited to squash.1,5

  3. Q03

Is squash the same as pumpkin?

    Related names

Pumpkins belong to the broader squash group, but a label that says only squash does not identify a variety. Flesh also differs from squash seeds, which are a separate, fattier ingredient.3

Read squash as a recipe detail

Ingredients are listed by weight when mixed, so squash appearing after another ingredient weighed less at that stage. Its position cannot tell you its percentage or its share of the finished food's fiber. Judge the main ingredients and nutritional analysis, and pass over health promises built around squash.
