A vivid spice with little proof for dogs
Turmeric is a ground spice made from dried underground stems. It gives dog food yellow color and an earthy flavor. Concentrated curcumin and turmeric extracts have been tested in dogs, but those studies do not show a health benefit from turmeric listed on a bag.

How it is made
Turmeric is grown as a spice crop. After harvest, processors cure and dry its underground stems, then grind them for food manufacturers. The powder is a whole spice, while concentrated curcumin requires further extraction.6,7

The whole rhizome brings its own aroma and bitter, earthy taste. A dog preference test gives no reason to assume dogs favor it.3,7

Processors already dry and mill turmeric for food markets. Ground powder avoids the additional extraction used for curcumin, though a pet food price comparison is not published.7

A turmeric extract trial found no force-plate advantage over placebo among 54 analyzed dogs, although investigators favored the extract. A 32-dog trial of a curcumin mixture also found no advantage on its joint scores. Neither tested ground turmeric alone.1,2

In one feeding experiment, kibble with added curcumin had less protein and fat oxidation during 6 months of storage. The researchers added curcumin after extrusion, so the result does not show that ordinary turmeric powder preserves kibble.8

A small experiment with 10 young beagles found changes in blood antioxidant markers after curcumin feeding. The dogs also developed infections and received treatment during the trial. It did not show a health benefit from ground turmeric.8

In a preference test with 9 beagles, food coated with fermented turmeric drew 46% of intake against 54% for the control. That small test does not support an appetite benefit, and it did not use plain turmeric powder.3

One study collected feces after dogs ate food coated with fermented turmeric for 4 days and counted selected bacteria. It did not demonstrate better gut health, and its fermented liquid was different from plain ground turmeric.3

Turmeric low on an ingredient list is there for color and flavor. Judge the food by its main ingredients and complete nutrition. If the bag promises joint or antioxidant benefits, look for a stated curcumin amount and evidence for that finished food.
