13 older Natural Balance dog foods absent from current brand range

What our check found

We checked Natural Balance's current range on September 28 and found that 13 dry dog foods we have reviewed were no longer listed under their older names. For 11, we found no matching recipe in the brand's range. Two have newer versions listed. The brand has not said when the older listings ended or confirmed that all 11 foods are discontinued. A food missing from its website may still appear at a retailer.

The three older Limited Ingredient Chicken & Brown Rice foods absent from the range were Large Breed Bites, Puppy and Small Breed Bites. Four other absent Limited Ingredient dry foods carried the Grain-Free Beef, Grain-Free Lamb, Grain-Free Pollock and Grain-Free Turkey names.

The other absent recipes

We also found no current brand listing for On The Move Dry Dog Food or Zen Life Dry Dog Food. The two older Original Ultra foods absent from the range were Grain-Free Chicken Senior Formula and Whole Body Health Chicken, Chicken Meal & Duck Meal. These, together with the seven Limited Ingredient foods above, make up the 11 recipes for which we found no current match.

Two foods have newer versions

Our check identified newer versions of two more foods. The older Limited Ingredient Grain-Free Beef Small Breed Bites is matched by the brand's current Limited Ingredient Beef & Brown Rice Small Breed Recipe. That current food contains brown rice, so owners feeding the old grain-free food should not assume the ingredients are the same.

The older Limited Ingredient Grain-Free Sweet Potato & Bison is matched by the current Limited Ingredient Reserve Grain Free Sweet Potato & Bison Recipe. Natural Balance lists both current foods for adult dogs. The brand says it recently refreshed Limited Ingredient dry food packaging and made minor recipe adjustments, but it does not explain how every older food in our check relates to its current range.

What to check on your bag

Compare your bag's complete recipe name with the current listing, then read the ingredient list, life-stage statement and feeding directions. This matters especially for a puppy food or when a newer name changes from grain-free to a recipe with rice.
