Pyridoxine Hydrochloride

A needed vitamin, not a wellness boost

Pyridoxine hydrochloride is a manufactured form of vitamin B6 added to help food meet its nutrient target. Dogs need B6 for normal growth and blood production. Its presence on a label is no reason to expect a benefit from extra B6.

What it is
A manufactured, crystalline form of vitamin B6 that supplies a measured amount of the nutrient to food.
Made from
Chemically synthesized starting compounds
Main job
Supplies vitamin B6

The story

How a 1930s rat cure became a dog food vitamin

Vitamin B6 started as an unknown factor in rat experiments. In 1934, Paul György showed that the factor curing a rat condition called acrodynia was a distinct vitamin. Samuel Lepkovsky isolated and crystallized it in 1938. The next year, Harris and Karl Folkers, and separately Richard Kuhn's group, worked out its chemical structure, and György named the compound pyridoxine.11

Dogs were part of the early research. In 1946, Sarma, Snell and Elvehjem injected B6-deficient dogs with pyridoxine or one of its 2 natural relatives, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine. All 3 were equally good at restoring growth and blood. Pyridoxine hydrochloride made by chemical synthesis was authorized in the EU as a feed additive for all animal species in 2011, and a 2020 EFSA review found it safe for them at commercial use levels.1,6,15

What it is

How it is made

Vitamin manufacturers synthesize this ingredient rather than extracting it from food. One published route builds pyridoxine from chemical starting materials, forms its hydrochloride salt, and purifies it for use in feed.6,7

  1. 01 // Source Starting compounds One published route starts with purchased L-alanine and oxalic acid, rather than an extracted food material.
  2. 02 // Process Build an intermediate Chemical reactions turn the starting materials into an oxazole intermediate used to build pyridoxine.
  3. 03 // Process Form pyridoxine Further reactions form the vitamin from the oxazole intermediate in the published synthesis.
  4. 04 // Process Form the salt A final salt-forming step produces pyridoxine hydrochloride before purification.
  5. 05 // Output Dry vitamin powder The finished feed ingredient is a white to yellowish powder ready for blending into a vitamin mix.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

82

% pyridoxine

About this much of the dry salt is pyridoxine itself. Most of the remaining weight is its chloride component.

Pyridoxine 81.4-83.1%9
Chloride 16.9-17.6%9
Pyridoxine hydrochloride assay 99-101%9

These are supplier specification limits for the dry ingredient, not an analysis of finished dog food. The assay measures the whole salt; pyridoxine and chloride measure its components, so do not add all three rows.9

Benefits

What it does for your dog

Each benefit carries the same evidence grade as the claims below.

  1. 01

    Protein put to use

PLP works with more than 100 enzymes, many of which handle amino acids from dietary protein. The support is essential biochemistry. No dog trial shows that extra B6 in a complete food improves protein use.14

  2. 02

    Normal brain messenger supply

PLP is needed to make serotonin and dopamine. One study found lower blood B6 in dogs with epilepsy, but no trial shows that the B6 in food prevents seizures or calms dogs.13,14

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Meets a vitamin target

Manufacturers add a measured B6 source so the finished food meets its nutrient target. AAFCO sets a pyridoxine minimum for complete dog food.5,6

  2. 02

    Allows for processing losses

A swine-feed experiment found incomplete B6 recovery after extrusion and better recovery from an encapsulated form. Its tested extrusion temperatures and pelleting settings did not significantly change B6 recovery.8

  3. 03

    Supplies a standard powder

An industrial synthesis route increased pyridoxine output and lowered its cost. Chemical manufacture supplies a concentrated ingredient that makers can measure into vitamin mixes.6,7

How much AAFCO sets a finished dog food minimum of 1.5 mg pyridoxine per kg of dry matter for growth and adult maintenance, but specifies no amount of this ingredient.5

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Vets say

Dogs need vitamin B6 for normal growth

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 3-puppy depletion study, restoring B6 improved growth and blood measures. AAFCO sets a minimum for complete dog food. These findings support meeting the requirement, not giving extra B6 to a dog already eating a complete diet.1,5

  2. Owners say

Vitamin B6 stops milk in false pregnancy

    Outruns the evidence

    3. Thin
    4. None

A 40-dog trial tested daily pyridoxine hydrochloride at 50 mg per kg of body weight. Milk stopped in 10 of 10 dogs at that dose, versus 2 of 10 on placebo. Ordinary food fortification is not that treatment.2,5

  3. Brands say

    Added B6 calms anxious dogs

    3. Thin
    4. None

A 21-dog trial tested a supplement containing B6, oils, vitamin E and herbs. Some behavior measures improved, but the trial cannot identify B6 as the cause. The supplement maker funded the study.3

  4. Owners say

Water-soluble B6 is harmless at any dose

Beagles given 300 mg per kg of body weight daily by mouth developed a swaying gait within 9 days, followed by sensory nerve damage. That dose is far beyond food fortification, but any-dose safety is false.4,6

The research

Studies worth knowing

Published research we read for this page, dog studies first.

  1. 1946 // Injection trial, 3 B6 forms

Dogs used all 3 forms of B6 equally well15

    Vitamin B6-deficient dogs

Found. Researchers injected pyridoxine, pyridoxal or pyridoxamine into the veins of dogs lacking B6. All 3 forms were equally active at restoring growth and rebuilding blood.

What it means. Pyridoxine, the form on the label, works as real B6 for dogs, although this test skipped digestion.

  2. 2021 // Treatment trial, 4 groups

A high dose of B6 stopped false pregnancy milk like a drug16

40 female dogs with false pregnancy

Found. Dogs got 10 or 50 mg per kg of pyridoxine hydrochloride daily, cabergoline or a placebo for 20 days. The 50 mg dose stopped milk as well as cabergoline did, and the researchers found no side effects.

What it means. This is a short course of a treatment dose. It says nothing about the small amount of B6 a complete food supplies.

  3. 2007 // Feeding trial, 4 vitamin levels

Pet dogs' blood B6 shifted on set vitamin diets12

    64 privately owned adult dogs

Found. Dogs switched from ordinary commercial foods to diets with graded vitamin amounts for 122 days. Blood pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, the active B6, was partially reduced by the end, and coat and hair did not change.

What it means. Blood B6 responds to diet, but this trial gives no sign that more B6 improves a healthy dog's coat.

  4. 2025 // Blood comparison study

Dogs with epilepsy had lower blood B613

49 dogs with epilepsy, 39 healthy dogs

Found. Researchers profiled plasma from 49 dogs with idiopathic epilepsy and 39 healthy dogs. Vitamin B6 was significantly lower in the dogs with epilepsy, along with changes in markers of oxidative stress and amino acid metabolism.

What it means. This links low B6 with epilepsy but cannot show cause. It does not support giving B6 for seizures.

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It supplies vitamin B6, which dogs need in small amounts. It adds no meaningful bulk to a recipe. Its place near the end of an ingredient list is expected for a vitamin.1,5,10

  2. Q02

    Does hydrochloride mean harmful acid?

    No

Hydrochloride names the salt form of pyridoxine. The feed ingredient is a purified powder, and chloride is part of its measured chemical composition.6,9

  3. Q03

Can the list tell me its dose?

    No

The ingredient list ranks items by weight but gives no individual amounts. Check the nutritional adequacy statement for your dog's life stage. If you need the finished food's B6 level, ask its maker.5,10

Our read // On the bag

Read it as a vitamin supply line

Pyridoxine hydrochloride near the end of an ingredient list is doing a small, necessary job. Its position cannot tell you the finished B6 level. Check that the food is complete for your dog's life stage, and do not use the listing as a reason to add a B6 supplement.

An ingredient on its own tells you very little. What matters is how much of it there is and where it sits in the list. That is why we weigh the top five rather than reacting to any single name further down. Back to the wiki
