United Petfood agrees to buy Wellness dry food plant in Arkansas

What happened

On September 22, United Petfood said it had signed an agreement to buy Wellness Pet Company's dry pet food plant in Decatur, Arkansas. The companies also signed a long-term supply agreement. United Petfood said Decatur would become its third North American production site, joining plants in Indiana and Quebec. The announcement describes an agreement to acquire the plant; it does not give a closing date.

This is a manufacturing deal, not an announcement that Wellness is selling its dog food brand. It matters to owners because the company running a plant can change while food sold under a familiar name continues to reach stores. Wellness's own media center still lists Decatur among its manufacturing locations, but it does not explain how that listing will change after the deal.

What is new for the food

The confirmed change is the planned ownership of a dry food plant and a continuing supply relationship between the two companies. Neither announcement names a Wellness dog food recipe made at Decatur. They do not identify a new ingredient, kibble format, life stage, package size or store rollout tied to this deal.

That leaves an important limit: we cannot tell from the announcement whether the bag you feed comes from Decatur, or whether its recipe will change. A long-term supply agreement suggests the companies expect to keep working together, but its terms and the foods it covers have not been disclosed.

What it means if you feed Wellness

There is no announced reason to change your dog's food because of this agreement alone. A retailer page we checked still listed Wellness Complete Health Adult Chicken & Oatmeal dry dog food in stock, though one listing cannot establish availability for every recipe or store.
