Perch

A lean fish protein, not an omega-3 source

Perch is a lean freshwater fish that reaches kibble whole or as filleting leftovers. It supplies digestible animal protein and minerals but very little fat, so any omega-3 story belongs to oily fish such as salmon or herring.

What it is
Freshwater perch, either whole fish or the parts left after filleting, cooked into the food as an animal protein.
Made from
Lake-caught perch, whole or filleting leftovers
Main job
Lean animal protein

What it is

How it is made

Perch is a commercial lake fish sold mostly as fillets. Fillets take only 42 to 50% of a Nile perch, so heads, frames and skin pile up at the plant, and feed makers take part of that stream.3,4,10

  1. 01 // Source Lake-caught perch Freshwater perch from commercial lake fisheries. Only about 45% of a European perch is edible flesh.
  2. 02 // Process Filleted Fillets go to the human market. In Nile perch, the head alone is 23% of the fish and the frame another 10%.
  3. 03 // Process Meal or silage Leftovers become fishmeal, or fish silage for animal feed when shipping them to a meal plant does not pay.
  4. 04 // Output Perch in kibble Ground fish or meal is extruded, cooking it well past 145°F, the temperature CDC gives for killing fish tapeworm.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

93

% protein

Raw perch fillet once the water is removed. It is nearly all protein, with little fat, so it adds protein but few calories from fat.

Crude protein 92.9%1
Ash 5.9%1
Crude fat 4.4%1
EPA plus DHA 1.2%1
Phosphorus 1%1
Calcium 0.4%1
Energy 4,360 kcal/kg1

These are fillet figures, converted from USDA's raw values at 79% water. Whole fish and filleting leftovers carry more bone, so ash and calcium run higher. European perch tests even leaner, 0.6 g fat per 100 g.1,3

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Protein without much fat

Perch fillet is about 93% protein on a dry basis and only about 4% fat, so it raises the protein figure without adding much fat or energy.1

  2. 02

    Digestible fish protein

In a 12-dog trial of extruded diets, the fish meal diet had the highest ileal protein digestibility, 87%, against 80% for poultry meal and 72% for lamb meal.6

  3. 03

    Sells a filleting leftover

Fillets are under half of a Nile perch, and Lake Victoria plants were estimated to produce about 36,000 tonnes of solid waste a year. Feed turns that waste into income.4,5

How much No published trial has fed perch itself to dogs; the closest evidence is a 12-dog trial of an extruded diet built on fish meal.6

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Fish protein is easy for dogs to digest

    Evidence

    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 12-dog trial of extruded diets matched for protein, the fish meal diet reached 87% ileal protein digestibility against 80% for poultry meal. The fish meal was not perch, and no trial has tested perch itself.6

  2. Brands say

Fish is a gentle protein for allergic dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Fish was the trigger in 5 of 297 dogs with proven food reactions, against 102 for beef. The authors note those counts could simply reflect what dogs were fed, and a recipe mixing perch with other meats is not an elimination diet.7

  3. Brands say

Perch adds omega-3s for skin and coat

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Raw perch fillet carries about 0.25 g of EPA plus DHA per 100 g, roughly one-eighth of farmed salmon's 1.97 g. No study has tested perch for coat health. A real omega-3 dose comes from fish oil or oily fish.1,2

  4. Owners say

Fish in dog food means a mercury risk

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

FDA testing found freshwater perch averaged 0.150 ppm mercury across 19 samples, against 0.995 ppm for swordfish. FDA puts perch on its best choices list for pregnant women and young children.8,9

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is perch just filler?

    No

It is an animal protein, about 93% protein once dry. Even when it comes from filleting leftovers, heads and frames are fish flesh, bone and skin, which carry protein and minerals. Filler would have no job.1,4

  2. Q02

Is it the same as ocean perch?

    No

Ocean perch is a saltwater fish that shares the market name. FDA tests the two separately: freshwater perch averaged 0.150 ppm mercury and ocean perch 0.121 ppm. Both sit on its lowest mercury list.8,9

  3. Q03

Can I feed my dog raw perch?

    Not raw

CDC lists perch among the freshwater fish that carry the broad fish tapeworm. Cook it to 145°F, or freeze it at -4°F for 7 days. Salting or smoking does not kill the parasite. Kibble perch is already cooked.10

Count it as protein, look elsewhere for omega-3s

Perch on a label is a lean fish protein, listed by wet weight before cooking, so it shrinks once the water leaves. Judge the food by its protein on a dry matter basis, and check for fish oil or an oily fish if omega-3s matter to you. Perch alone will not supply them.
