Salmon Bone And Marrow
Real calcium from bone, with no real marrow
Salmon bone and marrow is ground salmon backbone, usually with some flesh still on it. It supplies calcium and phosphorus, which men in a small trial absorbed nearly as well as calcium carbonate. Salmon have no true marrow to add.
- What it is
- Salmon backbones and frames, with the flesh that clings to them, ground raw for fresh or freeze-dried dog food.
- Made from
- Salmon frames left after filleting
- Main job
- Calcium and phosphorus from bone
- Typical amount
- Not published
- Watch for
- Raw handling hygiene, and extra calcium for large puppies
- Not the same as
- Salmon meal or salmon oil

What it is
How it is made
Salmon processors keep the fillet, about 56% of the fish. The frame, the backbone left after filleting, is about 10% of the fish and joins heads and trimmings as a by-product headed for food, feed or pet food.3
- 01 // Source Whole salmon Atlantic salmon yield about 56% of body weight as fillet, the highest of the farmed fish studied.
- 02 // Process Filleted Fillets come off and leave the frame, about 10.4% of the fish's weight, with flesh still attached.
- 03 // Process Ground raw In raw recipes the frame is ground with the meat and organs instead of being rendered into fish meal.
- 04 // Process Freeze-dried The mix is frozen solid, then its water is pulled off under vacuum without cooking.
- 05 // Output Bone in a nugget Ground bone spread through a dry raw nugget, ranked on the label by its fresh weight.
What is in it
Composition, dry matter
21
% calcium
Calcium in enzyme-cleaned salmon bone on a dry basis. Any flesh and fat left on the frame dilutes that figure, and no label says how much.
Why it is in the bag
What the manufacturer gets
-
01
Calcium and phosphorus together
Bone is mostly calcium phosphate. Enzyme-cleaned salmon bone ran about 21% calcium and 16% phosphorus dry, so it supplies the calcium meat and organs alone lack, plus phosphorus.2
-
02
Uses the whole fish
Frames are about 10% of a salmon's weight. About 10% of Norwegian salmon by-products, heads and frames, are exported for soups, and researchers name pet food as another outlet.3
-
03
Flesh rides along
About 57% of a raw salmon frame counts as edible yield, so the ground ingredient brings fish protein and fat along with its mineral, not bone alone.3
How much No source gives a pet food inclusion rate; in fish cakes, adding 2% salmon bone powder gave the highest gel strength of the levels tested.1

What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Salmon bone is a natural, well absorbed calcium source

In a 10-man crossover trial, calcium from cleaned salmon bone was absorbed at 22.5% against 27.4% for calcium carbonate. The data is human only; no trial has measured salmon bone calcium in dogs.2

Owners say
Raw salmon in dog food causes salmon poisoning
Outruns the evidence
Evidence

- None
The fluke lives in fresh salmon from the Pacific Northwest, and freezing fish solid inactivates it. Freeze-drying starts with freezing, so we infer the risk is low, but our source gives no freezing time and we found no study of freeze-dried food.8

Brands say
Bone and marrow support a dog's joints
Outruns the evidence
Evidence

- None
Bone is mineral, not cartilage. Even purified glucosamine and chondroitin failed to beat placebo in a 2023 controlled trial of dogs with hip arthritis, and no study tests bone for joints.9

Marrow adds extra nutrition
Outruns the evidence
Evidence

Bony fish such as salmon lack bone marrow and make immune cells in the kidney instead. The word borrows from beef bone and marrow; the salmon ingredient is bone and clinging flesh.4

What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt is the calcium and phosphorus source in many raw recipes, and cleaned salmon bone is about 21% calcium dry. Meat and organs alone run short of calcium. Filler would have no job.2
-
Q02
Do salmon even have marrow?
NoBony fish lack bone marrow and make their immune cells in the kidney instead. The name copies the beef bone and marrow line it often sits beside. Read it as ground salmon bone with some flesh.4
-
Q03
Is it safe for a large-breed puppy?
If labeled for itLarge puppies are harmed by excess calcium, worse when phosphorus is low. Feed a food stated to meet AAFCO growth for large-size dogs, and add no bone-based extras on top.5,6

Our read // On the bag
Read it as the bone in a raw recipe
In a raw or freeze-dried food it usually sits behind the meats and organs, which is where the bone belongs. Judge the food by those meats and by its growth statement if you have a large puppy. Ignore the marrow wording, and handle the food like raw meat.
