Pearled Barley

Useful grain starch, with some fiber left

Pearled barley is barley with its hull and part of its outer bran polished away. It supplies kibble with starch for energy and structure, while retaining some fiber. Pearling means it is not a whole grain.

What it is

How it is made

Pearled barley is a product of grain milling, not a leftover from brewing. Millers remove the hull and polish away outer bran to make a quicker cooking grain. Pet food makers may use the kernels ground.4,5,8

  1. 01 // Source Barley kernels Harvested barley arrives at the mill as hulled grain or a variety that sheds its hull.
  2. 02 // Process Hull removed Milling removes the tough hull before the kernel is polished.
  3. 03 // Process Bran polished Abrasion takes off some or all of the outer bran, leaving a kernel that cooks faster.
  4. 04 // Output Pearled barley Polished kernels leave the mill whole or ground into a meal for pet food.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

72-73

% starch

Measured in whole and ground pearled barley samples. Starch is this grain's main contribution to kibble, alongside a smaller amount of fiber.

Total starch 72.3-73.1%4
Total dietary fiber 13.4-15.9%4
Insoluble dietary fiber 8.6-11.5%4
Soluble dietary fiber 4.5-4.8%4
Crude protein 11.3-11.4%4
Fat 2.9-3%4

These figures come from 1 whole and 1 ground pearled barley sample, not a survey of commercial batches. Variety and how much bran the mill removes can change the starch and fiber balance.4,8

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Supplies kibble starch

Dogs digest cooked starch for energy. In manufacturing, starch also helps the kibble expand and bind together.2,4

  2. 02

    Adds some fiber

Pearling removes outer bran, but fiber remains within the kernel. It contributes fiber to the recipe, though starch is the larger share.4,8

  3. 03

    Provides grain at scale

Barley is grown widely and milled for food and feed. That supply gives manufacturers a dry grain ingredient for the energy portion of a recipe.5

How much A dog trial fed a diet containing 25% barley, but the paper did not identify the barley as pearled.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Pearled barley adds starch for energy

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Measured pearled samples contained 72.3 to 73.1% starch on a dry basis. An 8-dog trial found a barley diet digestible, but did not identify its barley as pearled. The energy claim rests chiefly on the measured starch.2,4

  2. Brands say

Pearled barley keeps blood sugar steadier

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 15-dog diabetes trial found lower average glucose on a peas-and-barley diet than on a differently processed maize diet. It cannot separate barley from peas or processing, and did not identify pearled barley. No pearled-barley blood sugar benefit was shown.3

  3. Brands say

Its beta-glucan improves dogs' gut health

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Pearling leaves some beta-glucan, and tested pearled samples contained 4.5 to 4.8% soluble fiber. Those were lab measurements, not a dog health trial. Barley feeding studies did not isolate pearled barley's beta-glucan or show improved gut health.1,4,8

  4. Critics say

    Pearled barley is just filler

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

The tested pearled samples contained substantial starch and dietary fiber. In a 30-dog trial, a barley diet supplied digestible nutrients and left stool consistency unchanged compared with rice. That trial did not specify pearled barley, but filler ignores the grain's jobs.1,4

  5. Brands say

Pearled barley counts as a whole grain

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Pearling polishes away some or all of the outer bran. A composition study tested 1 whole pearled and 1 ground pearled sample and distinguished pearled barley from whole grain barley. Fiber remaining inside the kernel does not restore the removed bran.4

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Pearled barley supplies starch for energy and kibble structure, plus some fiber. It is chiefly a carbohydrate ingredient. Judge it alongside the food's protein sources and nutritional adequacy statement.2,4,11

  2. Q02

    Is it a whole grain?

    No

Pearling removes the hull and polishes off some or all of the outer bran. Fiber remains within the barley kernel, but the finished ingredient no longer has all the parts of a whole grain.4

  3. Q03

    Is it gluten free?

    No

Barley is a gluten-containing grain. Polishing the kernel does not make pearled barley gluten free. If your dog has a diagnosed reaction to barley, choose a food without it.9,10

  4. Q04

What does its list position mean?

    Recipe weight

Ingredients appear in descending order by weight when the food is formulated. Pearled barley near the top therefore contributes substantial weight, but its position alone cannot tell you whether the complete food meets your dog's needs.7,11

Our read // On the bag

Read it as starch with some fiber

Pearled barley high on the ingredient list means grain contributes substantial weight to the recipe. Check the named protein sources and the nutritional adequacy statement before judging the food. Treat pearled barley as a useful carbohydrate ingredient, not proof of a gut or blood sugar benefit.

An ingredient on its own tells you very little. What matters is how much of it there is and where it sits in the list. That is why we weigh the top five rather than reacting to any single name further down. Back to the wiki
