Oat Groats

A useful grain for energy, not slow fuel

Oat groats are oat kernels with their tough outer hulls removed, leaving the bran and germ. In kibble, they supply digestible starch, plus some fiber and protein. Dog trials do not support a promise of steadier blood sugar.

What it is

How it is made

Oat mills clean harvested grain and remove its tough hull to make groats. The groat is the useful kernel, not a milling leftover. Mills commonly heat it to slow the breakdown of its oils during storage.5,6

  1. 01 // Source Harvested oats Whole oat grains arrive at the mill with their tough outer hulls still attached.
  2. 02 // Process Clean and sort Screens remove field debris, and separators group kernels by size for more even dehulling.
  3. 03 // Process Remove hulls A rotating dehuller knocks hulls loose; air and sorting equipment separate them from the groats.
  4. 04 // Process Heat and dry Steam and heat slow the oil breakdown that would otherwise give stored groats rancid flavors.
  5. 05 // Output Oat groats The dry, dehulled kernels retain their bran and germ and may be ground for kibble.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

61.5

% starch

The table average for oat groats. Starch is their main contribution to kibble, even though the kernel also retains fiber.

Starch 57.9-65.9%6
Crude protein 10.2-17.9%6
Total dietary fiber 130.4 g/kg2
Crude fat 1.2-8.2%6
Crude fiber 2-6.9%6
Beta-glucan 4.1-5.2%7
Ash 1.6-3.5%6

Variety changes protein and beta-glucan levels. The fiber figures also use different tests: crude fiber leaves out material counted by the broader total dietary fiber test.2,6,7

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Supplies usable starch

Cooking makes groat starch accessible to dogs. In a controlled cereal comparison, dogs digested most of the energy in processed oat groats.2

  2. 02

    Helps form kibble

Starch cooks during extrusion and helps the pieces hold their shape. A feeding study made complete dry food with groats as its main grain.1,2

  3. 03

    Provides an economical base

Cereals supply inexpensive energy for dry food. Milling adds a step, but removing the poorly digested hull leaves a more useful grain ingredient.2,5

How much A controlled feeding trial put about 40% oat groats into complete extruded diets for healthy adult dogs.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Dogs digest cooked oat groats well

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 12-dog comparison, dogs digested about 86% of groat energy. A separate 10-dog trial found good digestion and formed stools on a 40% groat diet, although protein and fat digestibility were significantly lower than with rice.1,2

  2. Brands say

    Oat groats improve gut health

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 10-dog trial, groats raised fecal short-chain fatty acids and changed some bacterial counts compared with rice. Those measurements show fermentation, not better health. The grain supplier funded the study.1

  3. Brands say

Oat groats lower a dog's cholesterol

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A pet food company reported about 15% lower cholesterol in 48 beagles fed 20% groats for 8 weeks. A separate 14-dog study used isolated beta-glucan, not groats. Neither proves a benefit from an unspecified bag amount.4,10

  4. Brands say

Oats release energy slowly and steady blood sugar

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 10-dog groat trial found no glucose advantage over rice. In a separate 18-dog trial, a diet with rolled oats produced a greater total glucose response than wheat. The second trial tested rolled oats, not groats.1,3

  5. Critics say

    Oat groats are just filler

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Groats average 61.5% starch on a dry matter basis. In a 12-dog trial, their energy was well digested. Calling them filler ignores their job as a carbohydrate and energy source.2,6

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Groats supply starch that dogs digest and that helps make kibble. They also bring some fiber and protein. Read them as part of the food's grain and energy content.1,2,6

  2. Q02

    Are oat groats oatmeal?

    Same kernel

Both start with the same dehulled kernel. Oatmeal is cut or rolled afterward; groats are commonly heated to protect their oils. Heat can reduce some B vitamins, so the name does not guarantee an untouched grain.5

  3. Q03

    Will they steady blood sugar?

    No proof

Do not treat the oat name as a glucose claim. A groat diet did not beat rice in a controlled dog trial, and a separate rolled-oat diet produced a greater glucose response than wheat.1,3

  4. Q04

    Does their list position matter?

    Yes

Ingredients appear in descending order by weight. Groats near the top mean a substantial grain contribution; lower down, they contribute less. Check the other grain names before judging the recipe.9

Our read // On the bag

Read groats as grain, then judge the recipe

Groats high on the list mean oats supply a meaningful share of the food's starch. Read the nearby meat and other grain ingredients, then judge the complete food and your dog's response to it. The name describes the kernel, but it is not evidence of steadier blood sugar.

An ingredient on its own tells you very little. What matters is how much of it there is and where it sits in the list. That is why we weigh the top five rather than reacting to any single name further down. Back to the wiki
