Whitefish
Printed as “Deboned Whitefish” on some labels. Same ingredient.
Useful fish protein, with wet weight to consider
Whitefish is moist fish flesh; the label alone may not identify the species. It supplies digestible animal protein. Lean whitefish flesh also contains some omega-3 fat, but its presence on a label does not tell you the dose.
- What it is
- Fish flesh supplied as fillets, mince, slurry or frozen blocks under the name whitefish.
- Made from
- Whitefish flesh, including usable fillet trimmings
- Main job
- Animal protein
- Typical amount
- Not published; pollock fillet was tested at about 30%
- Watch for
- A diagnosed reaction to fish
- Not the same as
- Whitefish meal

What it is
How it is made
Seafood processors take fillets for sale and recover usable flesh from trimmings. Suppliers keep that flesh chilled or frozen for pet food makers. Fish meal takes another route through cooking and drying.7,8,12
- 01 // Source Caught fish White fish such as cod are gutted and kept cold after capture.
- 02 // Process Filleted or separated Processors remove fillets or pass fresh trimmings through a machine that separates flesh from bone.
- 03 // Process Kept cold Minced flesh needs prompt handling and freezing because its quality falls during storage.
- 04 // Output Moist whitefish Suppliers offer the flesh as fillets, mince, fresh slurry or frozen blocks for pet food production.
What is in it
Composition, dry matter
4.5
% fat
Fat in one prepared pollock fillet sample. Lean whitefish adds protein, but this figure cannot tell you the omega-3 dose in a finished food.
Why it is in the bag
What the manufacturer gets
-
01
Supplies animal protein
Pollock fillet served as a major protein source in a controlled dog diet trial. Protein digestion did not differ from diets using chicken or salmon fillet.1
-
02
Uses recovered flesh
Separating flesh from fillet trimmings gives seafood processors another outlet for usable fish. Pet food suppliers sell such material as fresh slurry or frozen blocks.8,12
-
03
Leaves fat adjustable
Lean fish flesh brings relatively little fat. A maker can add oil separately to set the finished food's fatty acid level.2,6
-
04
Appeals through fish flavor
Whitefish gives makers a named fish ingredient for the label and a seafood flavor. Its incoming water means list position alone says little about finished protein.11,12
How much A controlled dog study tested pollock fillet at about 30% of the diet; that is a tested amount, not a published typical amount.1
Our read // The claims
What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.
-
Brands say
Whitefish gives dogs digestible protein
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a controlled trial with about 30% pollock fillet, dogs digested protein as well as they did on chicken and salmon fillet diets. That supports its use as protein, without showing a digestive advantage.1
-
Brands say
Whitefish is a low mercury fish
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
FDA seafood samples averaged 0.031 ppm mercury for pollock and 0.089 ppm for fish recorded as whitefish. Those averages cannot identify the species or mercury level in a particular dog food batch.10
-
Brands say
Whitefish boosts skin with omega 3s
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
A 40-dog trial found skin improvement with a diet enriched in omega-3s, antioxidants and polyphenols. It was funded by the diet maker and cannot isolate fish flesh as the cause. No tested whitefish dose supports this claim.2,5
-
Brands say
Whitefish is hypoallergenic for sensitive dogs
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Fish protein can cause a reaction. Among selected atopic dogs challenged with cod, 27 of 31 worsened. That group does not measure allergy prevalence in all dogs, but it rules out a blanket hypoallergenic claim.4
-
Owners say
Whitefish first means most protein is fish
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
FAO lists 66 to 81% water as normal variation in fish fillets. Ingredients are ranked by incoming weight, so first-place whitefish does not prove that fish supplies most of the finished kibble's protein.6,11
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoWhitefish supplies animal protein. In a controlled dog diet trial, pollock fillet supplied protein that digested as well as protein in the chicken and salmon comparison diets.1
-
Q02
Does whitefish name one species?
Not necessarilyThe name alone does not identify the exact fish in a recipe. If species matters for an allergy trial or a sourcing decision, ask the maker which fish it used.11,12
-
Q03
Is whitefish meal the same?
NoWhitefish arrives moist; meal has been cooked and dried before it reaches the kibble plant. A senior-dog trial tested 20% white fish meal, which is evidence about meal rather than fresh flesh.3,7,12
-
Q04
Does first mean most fish protein?
NoThe list ranks ingredients by incoming weight, including water. Fresh fish loses much of that water during kibble making. Check nearby meals and other protein ingredients before judging the finished recipe.6,11

Read the fish line with the rest
If whitefish leads the list, remember it entered the recipe wet. Look for fish meal, fish oil and other proteins nearby, then check the food's protein and fat guarantees. Whitefish is useful protein for a dog that tolerates fish. Skip it when the fish used triggers a diagnosed reaction.
