Useful fish protein, with wet weight to consider

Whitefish is moist fish flesh; the label alone may not identify the species. It supplies digestible animal protein. Lean whitefish flesh also contains some omega-3 fat, but its presence on a label does not tell you the dose.

How it is made

Seafood processors take fillets for sale and recover usable flesh from trimmings. Suppliers keep that flesh chilled or frozen for pet food makers. Fish meal takes another route through cooking and drying.7,8,12

    Pollock fillet served as a major protein source in a controlled dog diet trial. Protein digestion did not differ from diets using chicken or salmon fillet.1

    Separating flesh from fillet trimmings gives seafood processors another outlet for usable fish. Pet food suppliers sell such material as fresh slurry or frozen blocks.8,12

    Leaves fat adjustable

    Lean fish flesh brings relatively little fat. A maker can add oil separately to set the finished food's fatty acid level.2,6

    Appeals through fish flavor

    Whitefish gives makers a named fish ingredient for the label and a seafood flavor. Its incoming water means list position alone says little about finished protein.11,12

    FDA seafood samples averaged 0.031 ppm mercury for pollock and 0.089 ppm for fish recorded as whitefish. Those averages cannot identify the species or mercury level in a particular dog food batch.10

    A 40-dog trial found skin improvement with a diet enriched in omega-3s, antioxidants and polyphenols. It was funded by the diet maker and cannot isolate fish flesh as the cause. No tested whitefish dose supports this claim.2,5

    Fish protein can cause a reaction. Among selected atopic dogs challenged with cod, 27 of 31 worsened. That group does not measure allergy prevalence in all dogs, but it rules out a blanket hypoallergenic claim.4

    FAO lists 66 to 81% water as normal variation in fish fillets. Ingredients are ranked by incoming weight, so first-place whitefish does not prove that fish supplies most of the finished kibble's protein.6,11

    No

    Whitefish supplies animal protein. In a controlled dog diet trial, pollock fillet supplied protein that digested as well as protein in the chicken and salmon comparison diets.1

    Does whitefish name one species?

    Not necessarily

    The name alone does not identify the exact fish in a recipe. If species matters for an allergy trial or a sourcing decision, ask the maker which fish it used.11,12

    Is whitefish meal the same?

    No

    Whitefish arrives moist; meal has been cooked and dried before it reaches the kibble plant. A senior-dog trial tested 20% white fish meal, which is evidence about meal rather than fresh flesh.3,7,12

    No

    The list ranks ingredients by incoming weight, including water. Fresh fish loses much of that water during kibble making. Check nearby meals and other protein ingredients before judging the finished recipe.6,11

Read the fish line with the rest

If whitefish leads the list, remember it entered the recipe wet. Look for fish meal, fish oil and other proteins nearby, then check the food's protein and fat guarantees. Whitefish is useful protein for a dog that tolerates fish. Skip it when the fish used triggers a diagnosed reaction.
