Abound Lines, Reviewed

3 lines

Abound sorts its food into three lines. Grain-free pairs one kibble with one wet food, and neither lists grain. Pro Vet Formulas, the largest line, has seven kibbles and one wet puppy stew, split by life stage, breed size and purpose. Wild Beginnings has three kibbles and one wet pate, each with an animal protein listed first. Grain appears in every Pro Vet Formulas and Wild Beginnings recipe. All three lines include peas or lentils and potato.

The kibbles differ most in protein and starch. Wild Beginnings kibbles carry 30% to 34% protein as fed and average 30.7% estimated starch, below the catalog dry food average of 37.4%. They also draw on the widest mix of meats, including venison, duck and lamb. Pro Vet Formulas kibbles run 22% to 27% protein and average 40.1% starch. The Grain-free kibble shows 25% protein and 41% starch, with deboned salmon listed first.

Who Makes It

Abound is a Kroger store brand of dog and cat food, sold through Kroger stores and Kroger Pickup and Delivery. The line includes Pro Vet Formulated, Wild Beginnings and grain-free recipes. Kroger says the food offers premium nutrition at an everyday low price, with meat, poultry or fish as the first ingredient. 1, 2

Where It Is Made

Kroger uses third-party manufacturers for Abound rather than making the food itself. Sunshine Mills, Inc. was named as the supplier of the Abound Chicken & Brown Rice recipe recalled in 2018. Kroger does not publicly list its current manufacturers. 3, 4

History

Abound launched in 2014 as a Kroger private-label pet food brand. In May 2024, Kroger redesigned the packaging and added new varieties, including Wild Beginnings and Pro Vet Formulated dry dog foods. 3, 1

Worth Knowing

In late 2018, Kroger divisions pulled Abound Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe dog food made by Sunshine Mills because it might contain elevated levels of vitamin D, which can cause kidney failure. No illnesses were reported, and the FDA has since terminated the recall. 4
