Who Makes It
Gravy Train is a budget dry and canned dog food brand marketed by Post Consumer Brands, part of Post Holdings. It is known for dry kibble that forms a gravy when warm water is added. The current range includes Beefy Classic and Meaty Classic dry foods plus Chunks in Gravy and Ground Dinner canned foods. 1, 2
Where It Is Made
When Post bought Gravy Train and other pet brands from J.M. Smucker in 2023, it also acquired a pet food manufacturing and distribution facility in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, and manufacturing plants in Meadville, Pennsylvania, and Lawrence, Kansas. Grocery retailer listings say Gravy Train dry food is produced in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. 3, 4
History
General Foods introduced Gravy Train in 1959 as the first dry dog food to form a brown gravy when mixed with warm water. The brand later belonged to Big Heart Pet Brands, which The J.M. Smucker Company acquired in 2015. Post Holdings bought Gravy Train from Smucker on April 28, 2023, as part of a pet food deal valued at about $1.2 billion. 2, 3
Worth Knowing
In February 2018, Smucker withdrew certain canned Gravy Train, Kibbles 'N Bits, Ol' Roy and Skippy dog foods after a TV station's tests found trace pentobarbital, a euthanasia drug, in Gravy Train cans. The FDA traced the drug to a tallow ingredient and said the low levels were unlikely to pose a health risk to pets. The FDA terminated the recall on December 7, 2020. 5

What Gravy Train Has Announced
Post management cited continued Gravy Train price elasticity as a drag on pet food volumes. They said price-pack architecture changes for the brand would reach the market over the next few quarters. MarketBeat
