Who Makes It

Ol' Roy is Walmart's store brand of dog food, named after Walmart founder Sam Walton's dog. Wikipedia describes it as having become the top-selling dog food brand in the United States. It is sold through Walmart, which lists dry kibble, canned wet food and pouches under the brand. 1, 2

Where It Is Made

Walmart does not run its own plants for Ol' Roy; the food is made by contract manufacturers. Mars Petcare has said it makes only some of the dry Ol' Roy foods, and Menu Foods confirmed to Truth about Pet Food that it made the canned and pouch varieties at the time of that report. 3

History

Walmart created Ol' Roy in 1983, although some sources give 1981. Doane Pet Care originally made the brand, and Ol' Roy became part of Mars Petcare's private label business after Mars bought Doane in 2006. 1, 4, 5

Worth Knowing

In 2018, J.M. Smucker pulled some Ol' Roy canned dog food, along with Gravy Train, Kibbles 'N Bits and Skippy products, after pentobarbital was found in beef tallow used in the food. The FDA classified the withdrawal as a recall. Earlier Ol' Roy recalls included aflatoxin in 1998, melamine in 2007 and Salmonella in 2008. 6, 4
