Who Makes It

ZIWI, sold under the ZIWI Peak name, is a New Zealand pet food company known for air-dried dog and cat food, along with canned food and Steam & Dried recipes. The company says its recipes use high inclusions of ethically sourced New Zealand meat, organs and seafood. The United States is its largest market, at about 40 percent of revenue. 1, 2

Where It Is Made

ZIWI makes its food in New Zealand in company-run facilities, including a large kitchen at Awatoto in Napier that opened in 2022. Its careers site also lists a kitchen in Burnham, Christchurch and a freeze-drying plant in Hastings. 3, 2

History

ZIWI started in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand. In September 2021, Hong Kong private equity firm FountainVest Partners agreed to buy the company. In 2022, ZIWI agreed to buy Hastings-based Freeze Dried Foods NZ and its subsidiary Kiwigarden. 4, 5

Worth Knowing

Cyclone Gabrielle badly damaged the Awatoto facility in February 2023, and it had to be rebuilt. In April 2025 ZIWI slowed production there, citing weaker global demand. 2
