Rice Bran

Rice mills remove the hull and polish brown rice to make white rice. Polishing leaves an oily mix of outer layers and germ. Mills collect that stream for feed and often heat or dry it promptly to slow rancidity.⁵

   The bran contributes fiber while its retained oil adds calories. A dog study measured usable energy from full-fat bran, although higher inclusion reduced whole-diet digestibility.^2,5

   Feedipedia identifies oil-containing rice bran as a binder in mixed feeds. That gives manufacturers a functional use for this milling material alongside its fiber and energy.⁵

   Uses a milling stream

   Polishing rice produces bran wherever white rice is milled. Researchers proposed it as an economical alternative to added prebiotics, although that comparison came from laboratory fermentation.^3,5

   Bran contains fiber, but a 36-beagle trial found no difference in fecal characteristics between diets containing stabilized and defatted bran at 12%. That comparison does not show a stool benefit for healthy dogs.^1,5
