Whole Whiting

Real fish protein, with water in the weight

Whole whiting is fish added to dry food before cooking removes much of its water. It supplies animal protein and some fat. Its place on an ingredient list tells you the weight added, not how much whiting remains in the finished kibble.

What it is
Whiting added as a whole fish instead of being separated into fillets or rendered into meal.
Made from
Whole caught whiting
Main job
Animal protein and fish flavor

What it is

How it is made

Commercial fisheries land whiting for food and other markets. For this ingredient, the fish stays whole rather than becoming fillets or meal. It reaches a pet food plant chilled, then joins ingredients cooked and dried into kibble.4,8,9

  1. 01 // Source Caught whiting Whiting is retained as whole fish rather than separated into fillets and processing scraps.
  2. 02 // Process Kept cold Fish is chilled after landing and usually travels to pet food plants in refrigerated trucks.
  3. 03 // Output Whole whiting The plant receives wet fish to mix with the other ingredients before cooking and drying.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

70-77

% protein

Calculated from seasonal samples of whole Pacific whiting. The bag does not identify its whiting species, so this range describes a reference fish, not its ingredient.

Crude protein 69.7-76.9%4
Crude fat 8.6-22.9%4
Ash 13.3-17.2%4

These are calculated from seasonal means for whole Pacific whiting, not tests of the fish in this food. Fat changes with season, and the label does not identify which whiting species was used.4,9

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds fish protein

Whole fish contributes protein from its flesh and minerals from its bones. The finished food's protein guarantee cannot show how much came from whiting alone.4,7

  2. 02

    Adds fish flavor

Whiting has a mild flavor and gives the recipe a named fish ingredient. The maker publishes no palatability test showing what whiting contributes on its own.4,9

  3. 03

    Uses the whole fish

Keeping whiting whole avoids filleting it first. Pacific whiting is landed at commercial scale, but the label does not name its whiting species and no cited source shows a cost saving.4,5,9

How much The maker does not publish a whiting percentage; its list position reflects the fish's weight before cooking removes water.7,8,9

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

    Whole whiting adds animal protein

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

NOAA measured about 14 to 15% protein by wet weight in seasonal samples of whole Pacific whiting. Whiting is a protein input, but the label does not reveal how much it contributes to this kibble.4,7

  2. Brands say

Whiting's omega-3 makes dogs' coats healthier

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 16-dog crossover trial found that high-dose marine oil improved coat character against corn oil. It tested oil capsules, not whiting in kibble. The maker reports no EPA or DHA amount attributable to whiting.1,9

  3. Brands say

Whole whiting is better protein than fish meal

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

NOAA's whole-fish samples were 78.2 to 81.4% water. Fish meal has much of its water removed. The word "whole" gives no evidence of better digestibility or more fish protein in the finished food.3,4

  4. Owners say

Whiting is hypoallergenic for every dog

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A review counted fish as a reaction trigger in 5 of 297 dogs with documented food reactions. Those counts do not measure population risk, but they rule out a promise that every dog tolerates fish.2

  5. Owners say

    Whiting is a high-mercury fish

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

FDA's 13 whiting samples averaged 0.051 ppm mercury, toward the low end of its fish table. That survey did not test this food, but it does not support calling whiting a high-mercury fish.6

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Whiting brings fish protein, fat and minerals, so it has a nutritional job. The label caution is its water: the fish enters the recipe wet, and much of that listed weight leaves when kibble is dried.4,7,8

  2. Q02

    Does whole mean more fish?

    Not necessarily

Whole describes the fish before processing, not its final dry weight. Ingredient lists rank inputs by weight, while fish meal has already had much of its water removed.3,7

  3. Q03

    Is it rich in omega-3?

    Amount unknown

The maker does not publish how much EPA or DHA comes from whiting. The recipe contains other fish and added herring oil, so its omega-3 guarantee cannot be credited to whiting alone.9

Our read // On the bag

Count its water before crediting its protein

Whole whiting high on a list means wet fish was added, not that it dominates the dried kibble. Read protein and fat guarantees as numbers for the whole food, then check whether fish meals, oil and plant proteins sit nearby. Avoid whiting for a dog with a diagnosed fish allergy.
