Now Fresh adds four Good Gravy canned dog foods in Canada

What happened

Petcurean has expanded its Now Fresh Good Gravy line with four canned dog foods in Canada. Good Gravy began as bone broth coated kibble that owners can serve dry or mix with water. These new foods are minced and packed in gravy, ready to serve from a 12.5-ounce can.

The launch also includes cat foods, but the dog recipes are the relevant news for our readers. Petcurean says the cans can be served as complete meals or added to kibble. Pet Valu lists all four dog recipes, supporting the reported launch.

What is in the new cans

The dog recipes are Beef, Beef & Lamb, Chicken, and Chicken & Salmon. Now Fresh labels the two beef recipes grain free and chicken free. Chicken & Salmon is also grain free. The Chicken recipe contains grains, including quinoa, according to its ingredient list.

The first listed ingredient is beef bone broth gravy in the beef recipes and chicken bone broth gravy in the chicken recipes. Deboned meat or fish follows. The recipes also include ingredients such as tapioca, vegetables, and added vitamins and minerals. The brand says the foods contain no meat meals or byproduct meals. All four product pages identify the recipes for dogs of all ages and breeds.

What it means for Now Fresh feeders

This is a new format within Good Gravy, not a reported change to its existing kibble. Owners who already feed that kibble can compare the canned recipe with their dog’s current food before using either as a full meal or a topper. A topper adds calories to the bowl, so the amount of the usual food may need adjusting.

The announced launch is exclusive to Pet Valu’s family of stores in Canada. Now Fresh shows the cans on its US website, but we could not confirm a US retail launch. We have not reviewed these four wet recipes, so our reviews of other Now Fresh foods should not be read as ratings of the new cans.

What to check on the label

Check the exact recipe name and full ingredient list, especially if your dog needs to avoid chicken or grains. A beef recipe in this line is labeled chicken free, while the Chicken recipe contains grains. Do not assume two Good Gravy foods have the same ingredients because they share a name.

Read the nutritional adequacy statement for your dog’s life stage and the calories per can before replacing a meal or adding a topper. Compare those calories with the amount on your current bag or can. The feeding guide is a starting point; your dog’s portion depends on the rest of its diet and its individual needs.
