Seven Holistic Select grain-free dog foods absent from current lineup

Six reviewed recipes are missing from Holistic Select’s current range, while an adult and puppy salmon recipe takes the place of an older puppy food.

What changed

When we checked Holistic Select’s current dog food range on September 27, seven grain-free recipes we review were no longer listed. That is a meaningful change for owners who rely on a particular protein, kibble size or life-stage formula. The brand’s sitemap still names the older foods, however, and we found no brand statement giving a discontinuation date for all seven. Their absence from the current lineup does not establish when sales ended or whether a retailer still has stock.

Which recipes are gone from the lineup

The six recipes no longer listed are Adult Health Grain-Free Rabbit & Lamb Meals, Adult Health Small & Mini Breed Grain-Free, Adult Large & Giant Breed Grain-Free, Grain-Free Small & Mini Breed Puppy Health, Puppy Large & Giant Breed Grain-Free, and Weight Management Grain-Free Chicken Meal & Peas. These are all dry dog foods. Our review pages for each recipe list alternatives to help owners compare labels.

The seventh is Puppy Health Grain-Free Anchovy, Sardine & Chicken Meal. Our records identify Holistic Select’s Grain Free Adult & Puppy Health Salmon Anchovy & Sardine Meal Recipe as its successor. The current brand page lists that salmon recipe, while the older puppy recipe is absent from the current range. Owners should treat them as different foods: the names identify different protein ingredients, and the listed food is labeled for both adults and puppies.

What the listed food offers

The current salmon, anchovy and sardine meal recipe remains a grain-free dry food. Its ingredient list begins with salmon, potatoes, peas and menhaden fish meal. Holistic Select says it is formulated for all life stages except dogs expected to weigh 70 pounds or more as adults. That exception matters if the missing food was a large or giant breed puppy recipe. The current lineup also lists large and giant breed adult and puppy foods, but those listings do not make either one an automatic match for an older grain-free formula.

What to check on the bag

Read the complete recipe name, ingredient list, calorie content and nutritional adequacy statement on the bag in hand. Similar names can hide changes in protein sources or the life stages a food is meant to cover. If your dog ate one of the small breed, large breed or weight management recipes, check that the food you are considering fits that need rather than relying on the Holistic Select name alone.

Keep the old bag or a photo of its label while comparing foods. Our reviews of the seven older recipes list alternatives, but the current bag label is the best place to confirm what a dog would actually be fed.
