The Honest Kitchen launches salmon and whitefish Whole Food Clusters

The Honest Kitchen announced Fish Whole Food Clusters on September 21. The addition gives its dry dog food line two salmon and whitefish recipes: one whole grain and one grain free. Both use the brand’s ready-to-serve, bite-sized cluster format.

The company says the recipes are available on its website and plans a wider launch at Petco, PetSmart and independent pet stores on October 1. We could confirm the brand’s online product pages, but it is unclear which stores will have the new bags on that date.

What the ingredient lists show

Salmon and whitefish are the first two ingredients on both product pages. After those, the recipes split. The whole-grain version lists oats and barley before peas, egg and flaxseed. The grain-free version lists potatoes, peas, egg and lentils before flaxseed. Neither online ingredient list names chicken, but both name egg. Owners avoiding egg should pay attention to that distinction.

The brand says it cold presses, roasts and dehydrates the ingredients into clusters. Its announcement also mentions cranberries, blueberries and fish oil, but none appears by name on either online ingredient list we read. It is unclear why the announcement and product lists differ. For the ingredients in a particular bag, use the label on that bag.

What it means for current customers

This is another protein choice within a familiar format for households already feeding Whole Food Clusters. The brand says the clusters can be served as a meal, topper or training treat without adding water. Our reviews cover 18 other Honest Kitchen foods, but we have not reviewed these new fish recipes. An existing review of another recipe does not tell you how either new formula compares.

The product pages list both fish recipes for adult dogs, including seniors. They say the recipes are not intended for puppies or dogs during pregnancy or nursing. The grain-free page lists 357 calories per cup and the whole-grain page lists 377, so the same scoop size will not provide the same calories.

Confirm whether the bag says grain free or whole grain, then read its full ingredient list, life-stage statement, calories per cup and feeding directions. Those details matter if your dog avoids specific ingredients or you are changing from another Honest Kitchen recipe.

The brand suggests a gradual change over five to seven days. If you use the clusters as a topper or treats, account for those portions in your dog’s daily food. The company says its fish recipe provides omega-3 fatty acids for skin and coat support, but the amount is not established in the product details we read.
