Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal

Printed as “Organic Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal” on some labels. Same ingredient.

A useful forage fiber with inflated health claims

Dehydrated alfalfa meal is the dried, ground leaves and stems of a livestock forage. It adds fiber and some minerals to kibble, but a small amount is unlikely to transform a dog's gut health or provide the detox benefits brands advertise.

What it is

How it is made

Alfalfa is grown and cut for livestock forage. Feed processors wilt, dry and grind the crop so its moist leaves and stems become a storable meal that pet food plants can mix into kibble.5,6

  1. 01 // Source Cut alfalfa Farmers harvest the leaves and stems of a forage crop also raised for hay and livestock rations.
  2. 02 // Process Wilt and chop The cut plants lose some moisture in the field before being chopped and hauled to a dryer.
  3. 03 // Process Drum dry Artificial drying brings moisture down to about 10%, making the forage stable enough to store and ship.
  4. 04 // Output Ground meal The dried leaves and stems are milled into a coarse meal that feed or pet food plants can weigh into a formula.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

29

% crude fiber

The rounded average for dehydrated alfalfa. Fiber is its main contribution to kibble, even though the plant also contains protein and minerals.

Crude fiber 15.7-38.5%4
Crude protein 13.1-27.9%4
Neutral detergent fiber 32.3-54.7%4
Lignin 5.4-11.8%4
Ash 8.1-16.8%4
Calcium 11.5-33.6 g/kg4
Crude fat 1.5-4.4%4

Mature plants have more stem and less leaf, pushing fiber and lignin up while protein falls. Harvest weather and leaf loss during drying also change the meal a manufacturer receives.5,6

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds stool bulk

Its mostly structural plant fiber contributes bulk to feces. Fiber blends increased stool output in a dog trial, but that experiment did not isolate alfalfa's effect.1,2,4

  2. 02

    Contributes minor minerals

Alfalfa carries calcium and other minerals, so a formulator counts them in the recipe. At a small inclusion, it does not replace a balanced mineral mix.4,7

  3. 03

    Uses a feed crop

Livestock producers already grow and dehydrate alfalfa at scale. Pet food makers can buy a storable forage meal through that existing supply chain.5,6

How much A 12-dog feeding trial included alfalfa in a fiber and probiotic blend, but did not report its separate amount.1,2

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Alfalfa meal adds fiber to kibble

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Feedipedia's dry matter table averages 28.6% crude fiber across 13,571 samples. It is a genuine fiber input, although the amount in the complete food determines how much a dog receives.4

  2. Brands say

Its fiber improves dogs' gut health

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 12-dog crossover trial, alfalfa was bundled with other fibers and probiotics, so its effect cannot be separated. A 60-day raccoon dog study changed gut bacteria, but measured no gut health benefit in pet dogs.1,2,3,8

  3. Brands say

Alfalfa antioxidants protect a dog's cells

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 60-day trial found higher serum antioxidant capacity in raccoon dogs given alfalfa meal. Those animals are a different species, and a blood marker is not proof that kibble alfalfa prevents disease in pet dogs.3,8

  4. Brands say

    Chlorophyll in alfalfa detoxifies dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

The brand claim promises toxin removal. The 60-day raccoon dog study measured growth, blood markers and microbiota, while a 12-dog trial measured stool and digestion. Neither measured toxin clearance in domestic dogs.1,2,3,8

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It supplies measurable fiber, and fiber has a job in a dry food. Still, the label alone cannot tell you how much alfalfa is present or whether this particular recipe improves stool quality.4,7

  2. Q02

    Does it replace meat protein?

    No

Alfalfa meal averages about 18% plant protein on a dry basis, but it is mostly a forage fiber. If meat is scarce in a food, alfalfa meal will not make up the protein quality gap.4,6

  3. Q03

    Is it alfalfa leaf meal?

    No

This meal includes stems as well as leaves. Leaf meal leaves out much of the stem, making it less fibrous. The label should name the ingredient actually used.6,7

Treat it as fiber, then judge the food

Look at where alfalfa sits on the ingredient list. Low down, it is a modest fiber addition. High up, ask whether forage is crowding out more digestible ingredients and check the food's calories and protein. Ignore detox and antioxidant promises; neither has been shown for this meal in pet dogs.
