Chicken Meal

Concentrated chicken, not a lesser cut of it

Chicken meal is chicken flesh and skin, with the bone that comes along, cooked until most of the water and fat are gone. It carries far more protein per pound than fresh chicken, though the rendering heat costs some digestibility.

Chicken Meal
What it is
Chicken flesh and skin, with attached bone, rendered and ground into a dry protein meal.
Made from
Chicken flesh, skin and attached bone
Main job
Concentrated animal protein
Typical amount
Usually a main ingredient, often the lead protein
Watch for
Dogs with a diagnosed chicken allergy

What it is

How it is made

Rendering is how the poultry industry turns what does not sell as fresh meat into a stable feed ingredient. Heat and pressure kill bacteria and drive off water and fat, leaving mostly protein and minerals.1,5,7

  1. 01 // Source Flesh, skin, bone Chicken parts that do not go to the meat case, with the bone attached. No feathers, heads, feet or guts.
  2. 02 // Process Cooked Batch cookers in the plants studied ran for about 70 to 125 minutes, killing bacteria.
  3. 03 // Process Fat pressed out Melted fat drains off and is pressed out, then sold on as a separate ingredient.
  4. 04 // Process Dried and ground Solids are dried to under 10% moisture, ground to an even meal and dosed with an antioxidant.
  5. 05 // Output Chicken meal A dry, shelf-stable meal of about two-thirds protein, ready to be weighed into kibble.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

67

% protein

Protein in a tested commercial chicken meal. Raw chicken in the same study came in at 42%, because most of its dry weight was fat.

Crude protein 67.4%2
Fat 15.7%2
Ash 16.3%2
Dietary fiber 6.7%2
Raw chicken, protein 41.7%2
Raw chicken, fat 52.4%2

One sample, so read it as typical, not fixed. Across 200 lots of poultry by-product meal, ash ran from about 9% to 22%, and protein fell as ash rose.5

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Protein without the water

Fresh chicken is weighed wet, and most of that water cooks off in the extruder. Meal arrives dry, so each pound adds protein the finished kibble keeps.1

  2. 02

    Stores like a dry good

It ships and stores without refrigeration, and the recipe does not have to be rebalanced around its moisture before extrusion.

  3. 03

    The industry standard

US pet food used about 192,000 tons of chicken meal in a year, and it is one of the three most frequent animal ingredients on dog food labels.8

How much In kibble it usually works as the main protein, often listed just behind fresh chicken, which it outweighs once the water is gone.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

    More protein than fresh chicken

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Per pound as sold, yes: about 67% protein on a dry basis and almost no water. The gap narrows in the dog, since rendered chicken's lysine was 79% digestible against 87% for raw.1,2

  2. Critics say

Rendering heat lowers the protein quality

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Rendered chicken meal scored lower than raw or steamed chicken for amino acid digestibility in rooster assays, and a dog study found its methionine less available than pea protein's. The loss is real and moderate.2,3,4

  3. Owners say

    Chicken is a common allergen

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Chicken was the trigger in 45 of 297 dogs with proven food reactions, behind beef and dairy. Food allergy itself is uncommon, and those counts mostly mirror what dogs were eating.9

  4. Critics say

    Meal is a low-grade filler

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Even poultry by-product meals, a lower grade, digested at 80 to 89% for protein in dogs. Chicken meal is a concentrated animal protein, just not the best-preserved form of chicken.2,6

  5. Brands say

A natural source of glucosamine for joints

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

One chicken meal sample tested at 0.4% glucosamine. Even purified glucosamine with chondroitin did not beat placebo for dogs with hip arthritis in a 2023 trial.10,11

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

Is chicken first better than meal first?

    Not always

Labels are ordered by weight before cooking. Fresh chicken is mostly water that leaves in the extruder, so a food listing chicken meal third can end up with more chicken protein than one listing chicken first.1

  2. Q02

    Is by-product meal worse?

    Less disclosed

By-product meal adds parts like organs, which are nutritious. The real gap is disclosure: you learn less about what went in, and the mix varies more between batches.1,7

  3. Q03

Does high ash mean more bone?

    Usually

In 200 lots of poultry by-product meal, high-ash batches had about 10 points less protein and more collagen. If a food publishes its ash, a low figure is the better sign.5

Our read // On the bag

Read it with the protein number, not alone

Chicken meal high in the list is a good sign, not a verdict. Check the protein on a dry matter basis, look at the rest of the top five, and watch for peas, pea protein and lentils stacked up to pad that number. The name tells you what. The analysis tells you how much.

On labels as

Other names for this

Manufacturers do not all use the same wording. These all mean the same thing.
