Phosphoric Acid

An acidifier that adds phosphorus to the recipe

Phosphoric acid is a purified mineral acid used to adjust acidity in food. It also adds phosphorus that dogs can absorb, so its contribution must fit the whole diet's mineral balance. The ingredient list does not reveal how much was added.

What it is
A purified mineral acid solution used to adjust acidity and add available phosphorus to feed.
Made from
Phosphate minerals or elemental phosphorus
Main job
Adjusts food acidity

What it is

How it is made

The chemical industry makes phosphoric acid chiefly for fertilizer, with purified grades also used in food and feed. One common route starts with phosphate rock; a separate thermal route starts with elemental phosphorus.3,4,5

  1. 01 // Source Phosphate rock In the common wet process, finely ground phosphate rock supplies the phosphorus.
  2. 02 // Process React with acid Sulfuric acid reacts with the rock, producing phosphoric acid and gypsum.
  3. 03 // Process Filter and purify Producers filter out gypsum, then purify the acid for food or feed use.
  4. 04 // Output Acid solution The purified acid reaches food makers dissolved in water, at a concentration that varies by supplier.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

31.6

% phosphorus

Phosphorus makes up nearly a third of the acid's dry matter in this feed database profile, so formulators must count it.

Phosphorus 31.6%6
Crude protein 0%6
Crude fat 0%6
Starch 0%6

These are dry matter figures from a feed database profile, not a test of every supplier's product. Commercial solutions typically contain 67.0 to 85.7% acid, so equal weights of solution add different amounts of phosphorus.3,6

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Sets the acidity

Adding the acid lowers a mixture's pH. Food processors use phosphoric acid to adjust acidity during manufacturing.5

  2. 02

    Adds available phosphorus

The acid supplies phosphorus the dog can absorb. Formulators must count it alongside phosphorus from meat, bone and other mineral ingredients.3

  3. 03

    Potential in liquid feeds

A feed safety panel expects the acid to contribute to preservation of liquid feeds. It questioned how effective preservatives are in dry complete feeds.3

  4. 04

    Uses bulk chemical supply

Phosphoric acid is made at industrial scale, chiefly for fertilizer. Producers also purify it for food and feed use.3,5

How much The reviewed sources give no typical dog food inclusion rate, and an ingredient list does not disclose the amount added.9

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Phosphoric acid supplies phosphorus dogs can use

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A feed safety panel identifies the acid as a source of available phosphorus, and a feed database lists 31.6% phosphorus on a dry matter basis. That contribution must fit the complete food's calcium and phosphorus balance.3,6

  2. Brands say

Phosphoric acid keeps wet dog food fresh

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A feed safety panel expects potential preservation in liquid feeds, but reports no dog food preservation trial in its abstract. It questions preservative effectiveness in dry complete feed. That is too little to promise fresher wet dog food.3

  3. Brands say

Phosphoric acid makes dogs prefer their food

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

An industry trial tested an acid coating with 35 cats. Preference shifted with the coating sequence, sometimes toward food without acid. It did not test dogs or show that acid improves their food's appeal.7

  4. Critics say

Phosphoric acid causes kidney disease in dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In 8 beagles, 18 days of high phosphorus from phosphate salts changed blood markers, while the dogs remained clinically healthy. Another 8 dog trial found greater digestibility for a soluble salt. Neither tested this acid or diagnosed kidney disease.1,2

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It adjusts acidity and adds available phosphorus. It supplies no protein, fat or starch, but those are not its jobs. Judge the food's mineral balance instead of treating this ingredient as empty bulk.3,5,6

  2. Q02

Does it mean too much phosphorus?

    Not alone

The list tells you phosphoric acid is present, not its dose. Meat, bone and other minerals add phosphorus too. Ask the maker for the finished food's phosphorus amount when that figure matters for your dog.3,9

  3. Q03

Should dogs with kidney disease avoid it?

    Check the diet

Kidney diets restrict phosphorus, and this acid contributes some. Compare the finished food's measured phosphorus with your dog's prescribed diet target. The ingredient name alone cannot tell you whether the food fits.3,8

Our read // On the bag

Read the food's phosphorus amount beyond the acid

Phosphoric acid low on an ingredient list signals an acidity adjustment and some added phosphorus. Its position does not reveal the dose, and other ingredients add phosphorus too. For a healthy dog, judge the complete food. For a dog on a kidney diet, get the finished food's phosphorus amount and compare it with the prescribed target.
