A useful wet food thickener, not nutrition
Carrageenan is a red seaweed extract that thickens gravy and helps canned food hold its shape. Its job is texture. A short dog tolerance trial is reassuring at the tested amount, while claims that it causes cancer in dogs lack evidence.

How it is made
Seaweed growers supply red algae for the food thickener industry. Processors extract the algae's gelling carbohydrates, separate them from much of the seaweed material, and dry the extract for food manufacturers.4,6,7

EFSA judged 0.6% semi-refined carrageenan safe in a 28-day dog tolerance study. That is useful short-term evidence for the tested material and diet, not proof about lifelong feeding of every formulation.2

NoIt has a measurable manufacturing job: changing the texture of wet food. It is not added as a protein or vitamin source. Judge the food's nutrition by its main ingredients and analysis.3,4

NoPoligeenan is made by breaking carrageenan down under harsh acid conditions. It is not used as a food additive, so experiments using it do not describe the ingredient named on this label.5,7

No group differenceIn the 28-day tolerance study, weekly body weight did not differ between groups. Dogs initially lost weight because the calculated diets supplied too little energy. EFSA did not consider the continued loss in the highest-dose group adverse.2

Not routinelyThe tested wet-food amount was safe in a short dog trial. If your dog develops persistent stool changes after switching foods, compare the whole recipes; the label alone cannot identify carrageenan as the cause.1,2

Read it as a texture ingredient
Carrageenan low on a wet-food list tells you how its gravy or pate is held together. Read the meat, fat and other major ingredients first. If your dog does well on the food, this ingredient alone gives you no good reason to switch. Persistent stool changes call for comparing the whole recipes.
