Minerals

Necessary nutrients, but the label tells little

“Minerals” usually refers to a blend of mineral salts added to balance a dog food recipe. Dogs need the nutrients it supplies, but the word does not tell you which minerals are present or whether the finished food has the right amounts.

What it is
A blend of mineral compounds added in small amounts to help balance a dog food's mineral supply.
Made from
Manufactured mineral salts and carriers
Main job
Balances essential minerals
Typical amount
About 0.1% in one published kibble recipe
Watch for
Extra calcium for growing large breed dogs
Not the same as
Ash

What it is

How it is made

Premix makers combine mineral compounds because each is needed in a small amount and must spread evenly through a large food batch. This is a formulated blend, not a processing leftover.1,6,10,11

  1. 01 // Source Mineral compounds Suppliers provide compounds such as calcium carbonate, zinc sulfate and sodium selenite.
  2. 02 // Process Measured The maker weighs each compound against the mineral targets set for the finished recipe.
  3. 03 // Process Blended with carrier A carrier helps disperse tiny amounts of trace minerals throughout the dry blend.
  4. 04 // Output Mineral premix The blended powder reaches the food plant ready for one measured addition to the recipe.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

21.6

% calcium

Calcium in one published trace mineral premix after dry matter conversion. It reflects that formula's carrier, not a standard for every premix.

Calcium 21.6%1
Zinc 88,600 mg/kg1
Iron 39,200 mg/kg1
Copper 11,300 mg/kg1
Manganese 5,880 mg/kg1
Iodine 1,590 mg/kg1
Selenium 312 mg/kg1

These figures describe one trace premix, not all products labeled “Minerals.” They were converted from its published analysis using 0.66% moisture. Mineral forms, carriers and separate additions change the mix.1,10

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Fills mineral gaps

Meat and plant ingredients contribute minerals, but a formulator adds specific compounds when the recipe needs more to meet its intended nutrient profile.5,6,11

  2. 02

    Spreads small doses

Trace minerals are used in tiny amounts. Blending them into a premix makes it easier to distribute them evenly through a production batch.10,11

  3. 03

    Simplifies factory weighing

One premix addition replaces separate handling of several compounds. Industry suppliers sell that approach for its simpler purchasing, storage and weighing.10,11

How much One published kibble trial used a trace mineral premix at 0.10% of the recipe, with separate calcium and phosphorus salts.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Added minerals supply nutrients dogs need

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

The arithmetic is sound: AAFCO's adult profile sets a zinc minimum of 80 mg/kg dry matter, and a published dog recipe included a trace mineral premix. The finished food's mineral levels still matter more than the premix name.1,5

  2. Brands say

Chelated minerals give dogs a shinier coat

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In one 90-day trial of 43 senior dogs, groups fed amino acid complexes grew hair faster than controls. The mineral doses also differed, and most authors worked for the supplier. It does not prove a benefit from every chelated premix.3

  3. Brands say

Soluble mineral salts are always absorbed better

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

An 8-dog trial found phosphorus digestibility of 26% with the more soluble mix versus 20% with the other mix. Calcium digestibility did not improve, and the trial measured no health benefit.2

  4. Owners say

More calcium makes puppy bones stronger

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A review of feeding trials found excess calcium disrupted skeletal development in some growing dogs, especially when phosphorus did not rise with it. AAFCO also specifies a calcium to phosphorus ratio for growth diets. More is not better.4,5

  5. Owners say

Minerals on the list prove the food is complete

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A published recipe included a 0.10% trace premix plus separate calcium and phosphorus sources. One ingredient entry cannot show the finished diet's nutrient balance. Check the nutritional adequacy statement for the dog's life stage.1,8

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Mineral compounds supply nutrients a dog needs, even though the premix contributes little weight. Its job is to adjust the recipe's mineral levels, not to add bulk.5,6

  2. Q02

Does “Minerals” name a standard mix?

    No

Premixes are formulated for particular recipes. AAFCO's model labeling format shows “Minerals” followed by the compounds in parentheses; European labels may use “minerals” alone as a category name. The bare word does not identify a formula.7,9

  3. Q03

Should I pay more for chelates?

    Not automatically

A supplier-authored trial found coat differences in senior dogs, but mineral amounts differed between groups. That result cannot tell you whether a food using chelates is better for your dog than another complete food.3

  4. Q04

How do I check the balance?

    Read adequacy

Find the nutritional adequacy statement and match its life stage to your dog. If you need specific calcium or phosphorus figures, ask the maker for the finished food's analysis; the premix entry cannot provide them.5,8

Our read // On the bag

Judge the finished food, not this word

“Minerals” low on the list is ordinary because a premix is used sparingly. Read any compounds in parentheses, then find the nutritional adequacy statement for your dog's life stage. For a growing large breed dog or a dog needing a controlled mineral intake, ask for the finished food's calcium and phosphorus analysis.
