Ten Purina recipes we reviewed are missing from current brand listings

What we found

We checked Purina's current range on September 28 and found that ten dry dog foods we have reviewed are no longer listed under their old names. Four have newer recipes we identified as replacements. Purina Beyond Organic Chicken, Egg & Sweet Potato Recipe is marked discontinued in our records, while Kroger currently lists it as unavailable. Five others are absent from Purina's current product listings. Absence alone does not establish that a food has been discontinued or cannot be found in stores.

The recipes with newer versions

The four older names are Beneful Playful Life Farm-Raised Beef, Purina ONE SmartBlend Healthy Weight High Protein Formula, Pro Plan Adult 7+ Bright Mind Large Breed Chicken & Rice, and Pro Plan Adult Cognitive Health Chicken & Rice. Our tracking points to Beneful Originals Farm-Raised Beef for the Playful Life recipe and Purina ONE +Plus Healthy Weight High-Protein for the SmartBlend recipe. It points to Pro Plan Adult 7+ Bright Mind Chicken & Rice for both older Pro Plan recipes. Purina currently lists all three newer foods.

These are dry foods, but a newer name does not tell an owner whether the ingredients or feeding amount stayed the same. Purina lists beef first in Beneful Originals Beef and turkey first in ONE +Plus Healthy Weight. Its current Bright Mind Chicken & Rice is labeled for dogs age 7 and older. Owners who used the older large breed or Cognitive Health recipe should check the current bag's life stage and feeding directions before treating it as the same food.

The other six recipes

Beyond Organic Chicken, Egg & Sweet Potato is the recipe recorded as discontinued in our review data. The five we found missing from Purina's current listings are Beneful Grain-Free Farm-Raised Chicken, Dog Chow Natural Plus Vitamins & Minerals, Purina ONE True Instinct with Real Beef & Bison, Pro Plan Adult 7+ Bright Mind Small Breed Chicken & Rice, and Pro Plan Puppy Large Breed Beef & Rice. We have not found a Purina statement confirming that those five have been discontinued. An older product label may also remain online after a recipe leaves the current catalog.

Our reviews use each recipe's full name and list alternatives. Owners feeding one of these foods can use the name on their bag to find the matching review, then compare any alternative's ingredients, nutritional statement and calories per cup.

What to check on the bag

Check the full recipe name, not just Beneful, ONE or Pro Plan. Read the ingredient list, the statement saying which life stage the food is meant for, calories per cup and the feeding chart. Those details matter especially for a puppy or a dog moving from a small breed or large breed formula to a general senior recipe. If a familiar bag has a new name, compare its label with your previous bag rather than assuming the food is unchanged.
