Corn Gluten Meal

Useful corn protein with an amino acid gap

Corn gluten meal is the dried protein fraction from corn wet milling. It raises a food's protein level, and dogs can digest it. Its protein is low in lysine and tryptophan, so the complete recipe needs other sources of those amino acids.

Corn Gluten Meal
What it is
A concentrated corn protein fraction separated from starch and fiber, then dried into meal.
Made from
Corn kernels after wet milling
Main job
Concentrated plant protein
Typical amount
One dog trial fed 15.3% of the diet
Watch for
Recipes relying heavily on corn protein
Not the same as
Corn gluten feed

What it is

How it is made

Wet mills process corn mainly to extract starch. Steeping and grinding also separate the germ, fiber and protein. The protein fraction is dried into a feed ingredient, giving mills another outlet for what they separate.4

  1. 01 // Source Corn kernels Cleaned corn enters the wet mill before its starch and other kernel components are separated.
  2. 02 // Process Steeped and ground Water softens the kernels, and coarse grinding frees the oil-rich germ from the endosperm.
  3. 03 // Process Protein separated Screens remove fiber; centrifuging then separates the protein fraction from the starch slurry.
  4. 04 // Output Dried protein meal The separated protein is dried into a meal that averages about 90% dry matter as sold.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

67

% protein

The average crude protein content. It contributes substantially to the bag's protein figure, though that number does not show whether the amino acid mix is balanced.

Crude protein 56.9-76.2%4
Starch 9.1-26%4
Crude fat 1-6.5%4
Ash 1.1-4.6%4
Crude fiber 0.4-2.7%4

The amount of starch left after separation varies between batches. Protein stays concentrated, but it is consistently low in lysine and tryptophan, so crude protein alone cannot describe its nutritional quality.4

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Raises recipe protein

At about 67% crude protein on a dry basis, the meal raises a finished food's protein figure without adding meat. Formulators must supply its weaker amino acids elsewhere.4

  2. 02

    Supplies usable protein

Dogs digested balanced corn gluten meal diets in controlled trials. That makes it a practical protein ingredient, though digestibility does not fix its lysine and tryptophan gaps.1,2,4

  3. 03

    Uses a milling stream

Wet mills separate this protein while making starch, and Feedipedia reports that the dried meal is distributed worldwide. Pet food gives that existing stream another buyer.4

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Critics say

It raises protein without adding meat

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Corn gluten meal averages about 67% crude protein on a dry basis. Adding it raises the crude protein figure through plant protein, so the percentage on a bag cannot tell you how much came from meat.4,6

  2. Brands say

Dogs digest corn gluten meal well

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 12-dog crossover trial found the balanced corn gluten meal diet's protein less digestible than the wheat gluten diet's, but more digestible than the chicken by-product meal diet's. The result describes complete foods, not the ingredient alone.1

  3. Brands say

    It makes dogs' stools firmer

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 12-dog comparison, the corn gluten meal diet produced firmer stools than the tested chicken diets, while all groups stayed in an appropriate range. A 10-dog trial also found firmer stools than with a different corn protein.1,2

  4. Brands say

It replaces meat protein without tradeoffs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Corn gluten meal is low in lysine and tryptophan. In the 12-dog trial, the chicken diet supplied the strongest amino acid profile without added amino acids. A balanced recipe can use corn protein, but the substitution needs attention.1,4

  5. Owners say

Corn gluten meal commonly causes food allergies

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Corn was an identified trigger in 13 of 297 dogs with documented food reactions in a research review. That selected group cannot show the rate among all dogs, but it does not support calling corn a common trigger.3

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It supplies concentrated protein that dogs use. The useful question is what else supplies amino acids: corn gluten meal is low in lysine and tryptophan, so the complete food must make up the difference.1,4

  2. Q02

Does the name mean wheat gluten?

    No

The name uses “gluten” for corn's separated protein, but corn does not contain wheat gluten. It is a different ingredient from wheat gluten meal. A dog with a diagnosed corn reaction should still avoid it.3,7

  3. Q03

Is corn gluten feed the same?

    No

Corn gluten feed includes more fibrous milling material and has about 22% crude protein, compared with about 67% in corn gluten meal. The similar names describe ingredients with different jobs in a recipe.4

  4. Q04

Does a high protein number mean meat?

    No

Crude protein counts protein from plants and animals together. If corn gluten meal sits high on the ingredient list, it contributes substantially to that number; the label does not break the total down by source.4,6

Our read // On the bag

Count its protein, then inspect the recipe

Corn gluten meal high on the list means plant protein contributes substantially to the food. Look at the other main protein sources and judge the complete recipe, not the crude protein percentage alone. It is a useful ingredient when the food supplies the amino acids corn protein lacks.

An ingredient on its own tells you very little. What matters is how much of it there is and where it sits in the list. That is why we weigh the top five rather than reacting to any single name further down. Back to the wiki
