Fourteen Blue dog foods we reviewed are absent or changed in its current range

What our check found

We checked Blue's current US dog food range on September 28. Of the 116 Blue foods we review, 14 older dry food recipes no longer appear there under the names on our review pages. Ten are absent from the brand site, three have newer versions, and one Carnivora recipe is marked discontinued in our records. Blue has not announced that all 14 were discontinued this month. The end date for most of them is unclear.

The Carnivora foods are Adult Small Breed Woodland Blend and Adult Woodland Blend. The latter was gone years ago: a Chewy customer wrote in December 2020 that Blue customer service had told them the Carnivora line was discontinued. We have not found a direct statement from Blue confirming that account.

The other older names

The Freedom recipes absent from Blue's current site are Large Breed Adult Grain-Free Lamb, Large Breed Puppy Grain-Free Chicken, and Small Breed Puppy Grain-Free Chicken. Life Protection Formula Small Breed Adult Fish and Brown Rice is also absent. Blue still lists an adult Fish and Brown Rice food, but its page does not identify it as a small breed recipe.

Five more older Wilderness recipes are absent: Adult Small Breed Healthy Weight Chicken, Denali Dinner Adult Wild Salmon, Venison and Halibut, Rocky Mountain Recipe Small Breed Adult Red Meat, Snake River Grill Adult Trout, Venison and Rabbit, and Toy Breed Adult Chicken. These were grain-free dry foods. Absence from a brand listing does not establish when production ended or whether a retailer has remaining stock.

What changed in the Wilderness versions

The three old Wilderness names with newer versions are Adult Healthy Weight Chicken Grain-Free, Adult Red Meat Grain-Free, and Adult Small Bite Chicken Grain-Free. Blue now lists Healthy Weight Chicken with Wholesome Grains, Rocky Mountain Red Meat with Wholesome Grains, and Small Bite Chicken with Wholesome Grains. The old Small Bite review identifies that Small Bite version as its replacement. Small Bite and Small Breed are different labels, so check the full name.

The newer pages list grains such as oatmeal, barley or brown rice. That is a meaningful ingredient change for anyone trying to match an old bag. Blue also continues to list some grain-free Wilderness foods, so the words Wilderness alone do not tell you which recipe is inside.

What to check on the bag

Use the exact recipe name on your bag to find our review of the older food. Those review pages keep the last label we recorded and list alternatives to compare. Before feeding a different formula, read its ingredient list, calorie count per cup, feeding directions and nutritional adequacy statement. For a puppy, check that the statement covers growth and, when relevant, growth of large dogs. A familiar Blue line name does not mean the ingredients or intended life stage match your old bag.
