Animal nutritionist Paul Iams founded The Iams Company in 1946 at a small feed mill near Dayton, Ohio. Clay Mathile became the sole owner in 1982 and sold the company to Procter & Gamble in 1999. In 2014, Mars bought IAMS, Eukanuba and Natura from P&G for $2.9 billion, while Spectrum Brands took over the European IAMS business. 6, 7

Worth Knowing

In August 2013, while it owned the brand, Procter & Gamble recalled several IAMS and Eukanuba dry dog and cat foods because of possible Salmonella contamination. The affected products came from one facility over a 10-day production window. 8
